On opting for breast reduction surgery:

“I went to a swimsuit store with my cousin a few months ago and couldn’t find a bathing suit that fit me. I really felt bad about myself. I didn’t feel happy. I just kept saying, ‘What am I going to wear? There’s nothing for me to wear at the beach, at the pool.’ I can’t go to a party with my friends and wear the same thing as them. I have to be completely covered up; otherwise I’ll look a certain way that I’m not intending to look.”

On going from an F cup to a D:

“I didn’t want to not tell anybody and then have another million stories [say], ‘What happened to Ariel? She looks so different.’ And I also think there’s some good that can come from [telling] my story. It’s something that I did to better my life and better my health, and I think that can benefit a lot of young girls. I have felt happier with myself than I ever have. I am living a dream that a lot of girls my age would love to be living, and I’m aware of that. I’m really grateful that I’m able to do that and have a voice that I’m able to speak to teenagers. I don’t want to do anything to mess that up.”

On how difficult it is to find flattering clothes as a very busty girl:

‘I’d have to wear the dress that was super tight and form-fitted everywhere because if I didn’t, it didn’t look good. I didn’t really have an option other than to wear fitted clothes. Everyone would [say], ‘Why is she dressing so mature? That’s so inappropriate for her age! It’s hard when you’re a teenage girl and you already have a lot of ridicule and then you pile on more, and it’s kind of…it just gets too much. ‘They had to hide it on Modern Family a lot. Big sweaters, [or] strapping me down—which is fine – I understand that it doesn’t fit the character they have in mind. I understand that. But it was difficult to do that every day. I really couldn’t stand up straight for a long period of time. It started to hurt so bad that I couldn’t take the pain. My neck was hurting so bad and I actually had some problems with my spine.’

… says 17 year-old Ariel in Glamour.

all i gotta say is wth… if i had her income i would make sure I was too busy to even be on my phone. ugh. haha.

  • Alyona

Good lighting? What…cuz its so dark and bad quality you cant see anything? Lol…k

  • Demi

you can’t even see the front where her stomach is because she’s so desperate to show her arse. It’s not that hard to put on some panties is? The baby’s not coming out of your derriere Kim.

  • HB

Well, good for her. She looks great. Plastic surgery isn’t really at the top of the list of my favorite things, but she seems to have better motivations than most people, and she seems like she put a lot of thought into it. Very mature.

  • Chris

I was watching modern family and my friend commented on her breasts and asked if she had a breast job. I think she’s a pretty girl.

  • dq

Wow I didn’t recognize her AT ALL. And I mean her face, not her boobs.

    • Mel

I know, she looks really different. At the very least she seems to have lost additional weight besides the reduction or else has had a lil more done than she’s admitting.

  • lexi82

I usually don’t agree that teenagers should get plastic surgery (Kylie Jenner) but if she’s in pain, I say go for it. I have small breasts (A cup) so I don’t understand what the strain of big breasts must be like but I can imagine it can be pretty painful. If she feels more comfortable, good for her.

I dont know why bigger breasts wouldnt have fit with alex’s character?
She was 17 or 18, when she was leaving for college, most girls develop by 15 anyways?
    Are breasts that bad?

    • haysy6

If they are causing you physical pain, then yes.

      • AlyssaMoh

I meant why would big breasts be bad for Alex’s character on modern family? Lots of smarts girls have large breasts, she said it didn’t fit the character. Alex dunphy was old enough to be developed, she was going to college in the last season

        • bbbzzz

Just playing into STEREOTYPES. Smart girls can’t be sexy and sexy girls can’t be smart. Girls and women can’t embrace their bodies at any age. Society just forces them into categories – nerd, prude, slut, stupid, etc. SMH.

    • shailene

I didn’t get it either, but Modern Family relies on stereotypes a lot, so I guess that’s why. She no longer fit the “unattractive, geeky girl with glasses” mold they created.

      • AlyssaMoh

        Ah, see that’s silly

    • Lulubelle

Well if she were an F, yes. And on the show they covered her chest with sweaters and shirts because I guess they could attract some creeps.
I personally didn’t develop breasts at all, I remember seeing everyone else develop one by one. All I developed was a round butt. That’s why I bought myself boobs later in life, best decision ever. I feel so much more confident, I’m sure she does too.

      • AlyssaMoh

That makes sense kind of, but they kind of sexualixed Hailey though?

        • Lulubelle

          Yeah it seems that way.

        • Jo

But that fits her character and though she looks young, Sarah Hyland is of age. Ariel is still a minor and was around 14 or so when the show started. And she was meant to me a geeky girl.

          • AlyssaMoh

            Sarah highland is of age in *real* life, but on the show she was still a sophomore in high school;

Ariel was bustier towards her senior year and college, so she would have been in line with normal girls who develop at 16 or earlier these days.
Anyways, geeky girls have breasts – they’re girls after all. It would be weird for a geeky boy to have breasts…

Breasts are ‘that bad’ when they’re causing their owner physical pain.

I had a breast reduction at 18 and I’ve never regretted it. They made exercising very painful. I would get blood blisters all over my shoulders due to their weight and my back constantly ached.

Socially, I don’t regret my decision either. I was repeatedly harassed for having large breasts- even as a high school freshman, the upper classmen would clap every time I would throw away my leftover lunch and only refer to me as ‘that girl with the tits.’

I doubt her decision had anything to do with ‘Alex’s character.’

      • AlyssaMoh

Didn’t she say the producers had a problem and were strapping her down? I’m not putting down her decision, I just wonder why the producers didn’t like it

  • Emily

My sister had a breast reduction when she was 19. They had to fight really hard with the insurance to prove that it was medical, not just cosmetic. She was in a ton of pain all the time and had back problems similar to what this girl is describing. The reduction is much more invasive than getting implants because they have to cut a keyhole shape around the nipple and remove it and then replace it. It also leaves the woman with a much lower chance of being able to breastfeed so it’s something you really need to think about before doing. It was totally worth it for my sister, it transformed her life from tons of pain and from wearing large sweatshirts all the time to hide to now now back pain and being able to wear normal clothes without pouring out of them. I think a reduction is much different than a typical elective plastic surgery that is more for aesthetics.

    • liv

Completely agree… I’m not against plastic surgery (though I have none) I think a reduction is done for totally different reasons

  • shailene

Good for her. I think she was probably even bigger than an F cup, poor girl. She’s right that it can be very hard to find dresses that fit, all the smaller sizes seem to be designed for girls with B cups. She seems like such an intelligent and down to earth girl, I hope she sticks around.

  • fxf

Just wondering why is this considered acceptable, while in other situations she would have get criticism… Good for her btw, she did the right thing 🙂

    • Uma

Because this is not for vanity?! She says herself that she was in constant pain and started to develop spine problems. Her breasts were definitely too big for her frame, and a really young age also, so probably she, together with her doctors, decided that it would benefit her health most to have them reduced. So if you are comparing this to implants, you are wrong. It’s apples and oranges.

      • fxf

When you get teased for years and years about your body, getting told you are a worthless piece of sh*t, a man, a stick with no curves, being left behind for something you can’t literally do anything about it, thinking about implants is necessary to fit in this stupid society we are living in, just like in Ariel’s case. Thank you very much for you dumb answer. Mine was a legit question, there was no need to be this harsh.

    • shailene

It’s not super uncommon for girls to have breast reductions in their teens if it’s causing them legit medical problems and debilitating pain, cause it will only get worse over time.

  • MD

Such a pretty young lady. She looks a lot like her older sister who is quite an attractive woman also. I wonder if her role on the show will change. Will they try to transition her into a ‘hot geek’ kind of role? I actually think she is kind of shy about her looks and the attention she is and going to receive which is so endearing. Hope she doesn’t change……

  • ayu

Good for her! I can’t imagine having boobs that big, even a D cup seems large to me. She seems lovely. Level-headed, smart, responsible.

  • liss

I can see why she did it. I´ve always hated big boobs myself and If I had those I would have done that too.

  • blahblahblah

I feel weird to comment on a 17 yr olds boobs/body whatevz. lol.
