Drew Barrymore: ‘I don’t like it when everyone looks so perfect all the time’

On what she loves most about her looks:

My hair. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I destroy it time and time again, and it’s still there, semi-happy. I love playing with it; it’s like my personal plant—I keep getting to prune it.

On selfies:

You don’t always have to look stunning on Instagram. I’ve been makeupless, pregnant, and stuffing food in my face in many pictures; that makes it all the more exciting when I do do something more attractive. I don’t like it when everyone looks so perfect all the time. Where’s the humor in that?

Drew Barrymore: “I wanted fettuccine Alfredo, I didn’t want a barbell”

On losing weight after giving birth:

It took nine months to (put on), so it should take nine months to get off. I wanted fettuccine Alfredo, I didn’t want a barbell. I didn’t even want to think about (weight loss) until I immersed myself in babyhood. I wouldn’t look at my kids and be like, “I have a free hour, I’m going to work out!”.

I was like, ‘Don’t talk to me about how fast and fabulous you are or it came off. That was not my experience. I’m having to work my ass off until I even think about getting it off.

… says Drew, who welcomed her second child in April 2014.

Drew Barrymore: “I would love to have long, thin arms, I really would but I don’t”

On how women can’t have it all:

I would love to have long, thin arms, I really would but I don’t. I can run a company, so maybe I am just going to have fatter arms and run a company wearing sleeves? That is my balance; nobody gets to have it all. I would take wearing sleeves and running a company. Not that running a company is the key to happiness, but while I may not be tall and thin, I am capable.

… says 39 year-old Drew in Redbook Magazine.

Pregnant Drew Barrymore: “I just eat everything I want, which isn’t healthy”

On her pregnancy cravings:

‘The [craving] with Olive was tamales. Anything tamale. I love tamales. With this little lovely lady it’s like pan-fried noodles from any Chinese restaurant. I drive by them and I fantasise about them. I find myself like pulling over a lot for food. Like the car just goes off the lane and over to the restaurant.’

On pregnancy weight:

‘I just eat everything I want, which isn’t healthy. I’m bigger this time than my first time. My doctor the other day was like, ‘Yeah, so I think maybe pull back. A little bit.’ I was like, really? I thought I was doing great. I still fit into those jeans – they hurt when I wear them — but I still fit into them. I don’t ever pose, ‘I’m just so fabulous and I lose it like that.’ I want to enjoy the pasta right now! What’s 10 lbs?’

Drew Barrymore: “I’m definitely going to be 5 to 10 pounds overweight”

On cooking:

I looooooove cookbooks. I cook a lot when I’m pregnant. When I got pregnant the first time, I couldn’t even boil water. Now I can make the most spectactular slow-roasted pork tacos you will ever have, an incredible verde sauce with ancho chilies — so f—ing good. A Greek yogurt pie with lemon zest and pepper filling on a gingersnap crust with black seedless grape compote. Amazing!

On not prioritizing having a thin figure:

You don’t get to do everything all at once and all the time. Life doesn’t work that way. I’m definitely going to be 5 to 10 pounds overweight. I’ll be thrilled if my husband is pleased with me that day, if my kid feels like she came first, and if I accomplished something at my job. Then I can hit the sack. My body is never going to be all that and a bag of chips. I will never be that woman who gets up at 5am to exercise. I’d rather curl up with my husband and my dogs.
