On looking her age:

If you look after yourself and you’re healthy, then you’ll have the energy to do things. But not to recognize getting older for what it is? I do think the infantilisation of our generation is one of the huge issues of our time. People wanting to be 35 when they’re 50 makes me think: “Why? Why don’t you be 50 and be good at that?” And also embody the kinds of choices that are sustainable at that age.

On whether there is less pressure for women to look a certain way than 30 years ago:

I think it’s still completely s***, actually. I don’t think there’s any appreciable improvement and I think that, for women, the question of how they are supposed to look is worse than it was even when I was young. When I was younger I really did think we were on our way to a better world and when I look at it now, it is in a worse state than I have known it. Particularly for women and I find that very disturbing and sad…nothing has changed.

… says 56 year-old Emma.

Size 14 Model Denise Bidot: “Curvy women shouldn’t apologize for anything”

June 30, 2015 in General by Versus

Undddtitled-2

Size 14 model Denise Bidot and Swimsuitsforall teamed up for body positive campaign that encourages women to get their bodies out to the beach no matter what shape or size. Here’s what Denise says:

There’s no wrong way to be a woman. It’s time to stop apologizing. I want women to feel confident and sexy by knowing that there’s nothing wrong with being yourself. Forget all the rules! I love everything about my body. Every bit of it … the cellulite, the stretch marks, everything that I thought at one point was an imperfection, I now realize is everything that makes me unique… curvy women shouldn’t apologize for anything. They should wear a swimsuit that makes them feel comfortable. It’s all about the confidence. They shouldn’t worry about anything.

On wanting to play Precious:

“Lee wanted me for the thin, pretty teacher in Precious. And I was like, ‘Well, I want to play Precious—because that’s the role in this piece.’ Lee thought I was nuts. I was like, ‘Look, they turned Charlize Theron into a monster! I could be this girl!’ When I think about that now, it was such a Cookie (her character on Empire) move.”

Ellie Goulding: “I hated my chin, my nose, my eyebrows”

On being insecure with her looks:

“When I started out, I couldn’t cope with it. I didn’t quite know who I was supposed to be. I was never confident in my looks. I hated my chin, my nose, my eyebrows. I was told by people at my record company to watch videos of other girls, like Little Boots, and Elly Jackson from La Roux, and try and look like them. I had panic attacks so bad I couldn’t leave my flat; I couldn’t bear people looking at me. I would worry that I would never be able to sing because I couldn’t even get up. I was also horribly ashamed of myself because I felt like some sort of drama queen and all I wanted to be was strong.”

… says Ellie in Elle.
