Liz Hurley Talks about Her Diet
November 12, 2009 in General by Versus

The Daily Mail reports:
Her perfectly toned body is the envy of every yummy-mummy.
But at the age of 44, Liz Hurley has confessed how she has been forced to adopt a more extreme dietary plan to keep her famously svelte figure.
Miss Hurley has revealed how she has had to cut out coffee and wine from her diet. Now, instead of enjoying a glass of claret when she is at a social gathering, the model and actress has turned to vodka to keep her midriff trim.
Asked whether she missed wine, she said: ‘No, I don’t miss having a glass of wine because I’ve switched to vodka. I don’t really like vodka that much but if I’m at a party I have a small one with a lot of fizzy water and a huge squeeze of lime. Initially it’s like medicine but I’ve got used to it now.’
Miss Hurley, who lives in Gloucestershire-with husband Arun Nayar and her seven-year-old son Damian, admitted: ‘I used to drink an awful lot of coffee, but I was told after the age of 40 you have to be careful with coffee and wine. Apparently, that can be one of the reasons older women get bloated around their stomach.’
With her acting career sidelined, Miss Hurley has instead concentrated on her swimwear range and modeling.
Following the birth of Damian, she revealed how she only eats one meal a day and often goes to bed hungry. It was also reported last year that she has just one square of organic chocolate or one tablespoonful of ice-cream when she wants a treat.
Her exact words:
“The only meal I have is dinner.”I’m on a good old-fashioned low calorie diet – I’m going to bed hungry.”
That sounds a little very drastic. She is slim and toned and certainly not too skinny, I don’t see any reason why she wouldn’t be able to maintain this figure with 3 balanced meals per day.
What do you say?

at least she’s honest about her diet unlike all the other celebrities who say they eat whatever they want and dont work out….i appreciate her honesty
I agree. When I read it I was obviously in shock…. WOW. But the fact that she told the truth instead of the ol’ “high protien low carb 6 meals a day- thing” that everybodyyy says, is honorable.
If she ate high-protein, low-carb 6 meals a day she would probably look leaner than this…there is no need to only eat one meal a day, in fact, it is pretty stupid to do so. And even more stupid to spout off when she knows ppl will listen because she is pretty, despite her having zero knowledge of diet and exercise.
ps. The reason many celebs with bangin bodies state they eat 5-6 meals, high protein and low-carb is because that works for the majority of people. It’s not a secret or gimmick. Diet + exercise = leaner body.
But how do you know everyone else is being dishonest? Just because it doesn’t seem entirely plausible doesn’t necessarily make it a lie.
Most people are capable of eating whatever and staying thin, at least i know i am… But the ones who do not work out tend to be skinny-fat, although they look fine with their clothes on.. I’m in my twenties, I have a faster metabolism and i know for a fact i can eat whatever I want. The key is portion control, and once you get used to eating the right amount, you can eat whatever… So I can’t understand when skinny people are accused of lying.
It’s not true that most people can eat whatever and stay thin, in fact, if it was, it wouldn’t have so many fat people in the world… That’s YOUR metabolism but most of people ISN’T like this. I say for my own experience. I’m 22 and I’ve been chubbie my whole childhood and almost all high school… I didn’t eat a lot, it was my metabolism. Now, with a control diet from a endocrionologist and exercising 3x a week I’m in my perfect weigh.
One tablespoonful of ice-cream? Ahh, the glamorous life of a celebrity!
She drinks vodka with fizzy water instead of a glass of red wine (full of anti-oxidants) and she eats only one meal per day. Very healthy indeed…All these celebrities talk about diet is really outrageous. Diet is a serious issue and an actress who has no clue about it should keep her ’secrets’ to herself. There are teenage girls that follow what ever brainless celebrities say.
I want to smack her in the forehead and say “you should have had a V8.”
why doesnt she do what everybody does eat breakfast, luch and dinner and workout theirs no way i could live on 1 meal a day if i dont eat i become cranky she shouldnt put this type of information out their though young teenage girls could follow this kind of crazy diet
That meal skipping quote is old and right after she gave birth I believe…She looks good now and I’m sure that she isn’t still doing that.
Also, isn’t coffee a diuretic? How could that make you bloat? Wine I could see, but coffee makes no sense (unless of course she’s filling it with dairy and sugar).
When I drink coffee I bloat. But it’s temporary…it’s only because coffee irritates my stomach that causes me to bloat. It’s not weight gain. But then again I don’t know about older women’s bodies.
I think you are right though, coffee has almost no calories unless you fill it with cream and sugar. And even with cream and sugar you can balance it out so that a cup of coffee only has 50 calories. So it doesn’t make very much sense.
One of my old friend’s Moms was over 50 when we graduated High School…That woman had a far better body than Hurley and she ate normally – three meals a day, snacks. I mean, I know that depending on the body type a diet can do different things but eating one meal a day is certainly not healthy, no matter how you put it.
It a shame . . . I always thought she was pretty cool.
She is probably used to starving herself for years and has royally messed up her body. I don’t think she exercises either. Her metabolism is probably slower due to the one meal than it would be if she ate smaller portions throughout the day.
agreed.
One meal a day is just another way to eat, hasn’t anyone ever heard of the Warrior Diet?
http://www.warriordiet.com/content/view/24/35/
http://fitnessblackbook.com/dieting_for_fat_loss/the-one-meal-per-day-warrior-dietrevisited/
Do your research before you spew nonsense! One meal per day is completely healthy and can actually prolong your life span.
In case that was for me, I am aware of the Warrior Diet and I do my research – however, I choose, occasionally, to share my opinions… on MY website. I did not and will not discuss if the one meal diet is healthy or not.
Fact: it IS a diet and my point was that she doesn’t need to permanently be on a strict diet (that makes her feel hungry!) in order to maintain her current figure.
One meal a day is very very very bad for you. How do you obtain the necessary energy in the day to do daily tasks (eg exercising, studying etc).
That is very unrealistic. You can maintain a healthy body with 5 (small) meals a day (breakky, snack, lunch, snack, dinner)…I know that i can!!
I’lll admit that i used to foolishly eat only one meal a day and attempt at excersing 2 hours a day…i felt like i had zero energy and generally felt horrible.
Since eating 5 small meals a day, i have alot more energy and have since lost 10kg.
I went to the websites you suggested, Alias, and I don’t know, call me a critic but I am not so sure about their claims. :/ It sounds too good to be true, and they make a lot of typical diet fad claims. Is there any objective research studies that you know of regarding the diet (sorry, I’m labelling you the expert on the diet here!)? I tried to find some on Google Scholar but all I found was an article saying that there should be research studies done on meal frequency. (shrug)
I did google meal frequency on Google Scholar and a lot of articles support eating many small meals throughout the day. But most of the studies compare eating 5 smaller meals to 3 meals, not to one meal, so it’s hard to say that the Warrior Diet is actually unhealthy. It sounds unhealthy, but it might actually be healthy. But then again there are studies saying you sholdn’t skip meals. I’d just like to see an objective research study before I decide.
Except that some of us know enough anatomy and biology to know it’s bad because it IS bad. Your stomach produces acid non stop. That acid is either going to digest food, or it’s going to digest your stomach. Why do you think starving kids in Africa have that bloated belly look. It’s because their stomach are FILLED with stomach acid and are bloated.
Second:
It’s very well known how your body reacts if more then 3-4 hours pass between meals. I could go into details about the brain-hormone connection, but I’ll keep it short – it makes you hungry and very prone to binging, and eating bad foods. Once you eat again, there’s a LAG, where your body, instead of replenishing your organs with their needed nutrients, actually GAINS fat for a while. Only after it’s absolutely sure it’s going to be a decent meal, it gets back to proper metabolism. Which is a lot slower. And even so, those bad hormones associated with hunger and stress and cravings, they remain elevated.
Third – your body needs normal portions. One meal a day, to supply enough calories to keep you alive, AND be nutritionally sound, has to be a gigantic meal. Also, very heavy and hard to digest. After such a long period of starving, do you think your body needs a huge dose of fats and protein to digest? Sounds like a sure recipe for ulcer and heartburn, bloating, and constipation. And if it is a small portion, then most likely you’re setting yourself up for nutritional deficiencies.
Wow, now THAT is a great post. Ive never read anything that broke down the diet’s affect on the digestive system as well as you just did. Bravo!
Lol, alias, you lose.
You did a pretty good job explaining why one meal a day is unhealthy, except for talking about children in Africa. Their bloated bellies are from vitamin deficiencies, not full of stomach acid.
My bad, malnutrition in general. Protein specifically. Their reliance on carb-heavy foods (such as rice) result in retarded development, a fatty liver, and a bloated belly, among many other things.
Thank you for being intelligent and bringing in science….I am a science person and I hate it when people ignore the hard facts when it comes weight and being healthy…..just because you are thin does not make you healthy… our bodies can take periodic reductions in calories but as mentioned before it is crazy to starve just to maintain a look….this is the problem with Western society …we are just so extreme….if it takes that much too remain thin then maybe that is not your bodies set point….
Well clearly none of you read the article or you tried to read the article and couldn’t comprehend it…. I wasn’t suggesting that everyone must eat this way and if you do anything otherwise that is wrong. I was merely stating that if one DOES choose to eat this way, it actually has an IMMENSE amount of health benefits – and that people shouldn’t be so quick to judge about something they know absolutely nothing about.
HOWEVER, the idea is that you have to actually READ the article… I can only offer the information, you have to actually use your brain and do the rest of the work.
And BTW I have actually followed the Warrior Diet for a while and I honestly have never felt more full of energy throughout the day and my skin was never clearer, I slept SO much better and felt rejuvenated.
suzushii – You make some good points, but reading your comment I can CLEARLY see that you did not read the article.
All of the points you mentioned are mentioned on the website.
READ PEOPLE COME ON!
Alias,
You’re not even addressing the fact that others may find what you’re talking about ridiculous. If you’re happy with the results of eating only once a day, then enjoy yourself. The rest of us, myself especially, enjoy food and an active metabolism.
Yeah, Liz Hurley has been like that forever. She said pretty much the same thing in an interview I read quite some time ago. Anybody can eat 3 meals per day and still stay trim. What a shame.
I don’t get why she’s drinking vodka if she dislikes it to such an extent that she’s heavily diluting it and comparing it to taking medication. How about…don’t drink it if you don’t like it?
I agree, she just wants to get drunk, or a little tipsy at least, otherwise she could just have a juice, a soda, a water…
I hate the taste of all alcohol but I still drink it occassionally (honestly no more than twice a month) to get tipsy or drunk.
You’re totally right. That’s a serious red flag. Why drink something that contains calories (if you’re on such a restrictive diet) when you hate it? Combined with her one meal a day, she’s set up for vitamin deficiencies. Imagine when she drinks the vodka at a social gathering and hasn’t eaten ALL day. That’s a hot mess.
Versus,I always thought coffee helps with losing weight…I do not understand what she said…that coffee makes you bloat..
dwp:
It is not skinny-fat…it is actually fat-skinny…means you look skinny with your clothes…but your body is soft and not toned..
most people eat whatever they want and do not gain weight? really ?
” and once you get used to eating the right amount, you can eat whatever…” what does this even mean? how can there be a right amount if you eat whatever you want?
well,I will just assume English is not your first language..and the point you are making is not coming through clear..
I didn’t get the coffee part either…
I Googled coffee and bloating and didn’t find much on it. It appears it does cause bloating…but only in a very limited number of people who have a more sensitive gastrointestinal track.
So…it’s weird that she’s not drinking it because somebody, who I’ll assume wasn’t her doctor, told her not to. If she has the sensitivity that causes bloating, she probably would have experienced it already.
But from some of what she’s been quoted from up there, which is all I’m going on, she doesn’t seem too bright.
I don’t know about coffee, i drink it way too much and i know (and feel in my body) it’s not the best thing to do, but it doesn’t cost me bloating. However, bloating doesn’t just come from eating caloric foods, but from the ingredients that your tummy has to digest or otherwise process. Coffee is a diuretic for those who don’t drink it that much, but the regular users normally have gotten used to it so they can even count it to the daily water intake requirement. It can boost the metabolism by about 50 kcals/day i think, so not that much.. I have quite a sensitive stomach that reacts to many ingredients (i’m not allergic to anything though) and also if i mess up my eating “schedule” too much. I could believe that for some coffee would do that, but i haven’t heard of anyone saying such thing.
Yes, English is not my first language, let me try to make myself clear then..
‘whatever you want’ means you can eat cake, fries, pizza all these things, but in moderation. And after a while it just becomes a life style and you don’t count calories.
I’ve heard in America portions are so big and it must be really hard to get your intake under control, but again you can eat whatever, it is simple math, you have to burn more than you eat.
I see people get confused when you say ‘whatever’, but I believe all the celebrities who are accused of lying mean what I mean when they say they eat.
I want to reply to that part about her “one meal diet”. I would never take diet advice from her. Firstly that diet sounds like it would be painful to stick to. Secondly you would either end up anorexic unless you were meeting all the right nutrional needs for your body which would be hard at one meal, I mean there is no way your body could properly digest all that food in one sitting and besides you would be stretching the hell out of your stomach and would probably end up tearing your stomach lining. Secondly even if you were getting all the nutrition your body needed and you were ok with the bloating ect it would proably slow down your metabolism so badly and you body would go into starvation mode and you would end up storing everything you eat at that one sitting because your body would be unsure of the next time it was going to get food. Gosh what a crazy diet. No offence but she is not a dietician and if your that rich why wouldn’t you hire one. Poor girl she is trying so hard to keep her figure but she doesn’t have to. No offence, she is slim and toned and looks awsome for her age but I know of other people who are in better shape and don’t go to those lengths to stay that way.
Hello
she just looks a normal weight to me and not toned or thin. Find it hard to believe she only eats one meal a day. I am thinner and more toned than her at 38. I eat a healthy cereal breakfast. Brown roll and apple and or small choc bar for lunch. Hearty home cooked meal for tea, such as grilled chicken or fish with loads of veggies. Also snack on fruit if I get hungry. I eat around 1800 cals a day. I exercise 4 times a week and garden 2 times a week and clean house 3 times a week….I also drink wine at weekend,,, 2-3 glasses because I enjoy it. I am 5 foot 8 and nine stone . If she only eats one meal a day, she cannot be doing much exercise or have much energy and bet her body has slowed right down too if she goes to bed hungry,,, calorie wise .. I eat healthy and have loads of energy and guess because i eat plenty keep my metabolisem up too. Bet hers has dropped right down. Her eating and drinking habits sound boring and depressing…food and drink should be enjoyed and you can still stay healthy and slim….
I agree with you…P.S Gardening can be good exercise too. I don’t think people realise that house work is also good exercise. It’s a win win situation. Your house and or yards looks tidy after and you have also worked those muscles and got some cardio in. lol. I love vaccuming with my mp3 player attached to my head. With some motivational music.
I think shes always been nutty about diet . Anyone remember her quote about marilyn monroe? she said something to the extent of “[marilyn] was sexy, but personally, i’d kill myself if i ever got that fat!”
that says it all, Marilyn Monroe had a perfect slim but hour glass figure…she was never fat at all….and I read she was a size 8 to 10, Uk size,, so perfect too….Liz Hurley has funny views of what is fat and healthy….
I hope nobody ever looks to this woman for diet advice.
Apparently, her ingenious diet already caused her brain to shrink. She deserves a good kicking to the face for being such an awful rolemodel for young girls.
