Former Miss Argentina Dies after Butt Implants Surgery
December 3, 2009 in General by Versus

This one is so sad – let’s hear the story from The Daily Mail:
An ex-model who was obsessed with maintaining her youthful looks has died following surgery to make her buttocks firmer. Former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, 38, was rushed to hospital with severe breathing problems after the cosmetic operation. The mother of eight-year-old twins died on Sunday from a blocked lung artery after spending three days in a critical condition in intensive care.
Her close friend and fashion designer Roberto Piazza said the brunette had become obsessed with her looks as her successful modelling career approached its end. He said: ‘Solange was a girl who had everything. She lived the life of a goddess, she was the envy of everybody. ‘Now she is dead because she wanted a slightly firmer behind.’She died because of her obsession with beauty.’
Her friend Mr Piazza said she had enjoyed a hugely successful career around the world but became obsessed with her looks after returning home to Argentina.
He said: ‘She was a fantastic model. When I first met her I thought ‘this girl is perfect’. ‘She had an amazing body, she wasn’t hyper-skinny, she had a voluptuous body, an exotic beauty. ‘In 1994 she participated in Miss Universe. She was very successful around the world, she worked a lot in Paris. ‘She was different, not a Barbie-like beauty. Until she started to become obsessed by her looks.’
Mr Piazza said Ms Magnano had surgery ‘to lift her breasts, which had drooped after she gave birth.’ Then she became obsessed with her buttocks. ‘She began to investigate because she wanted it to be firmer. She said she had cellulite,’ he said.
Her death has sparked a huge debate in Argentina about the rights and wrongs of cosmetic surgery. Around 50,000 cosmetic operations were carried out in the country last year, up more than 60 per cent in five years.

They say if you live by the sword you die by it. So in that turn I guess if you live for beauty you’ll die for it. Sometimes I feel blessed to have never had it.
What a terrible loss for her children.
Butt implants are beyond ridiculous. So sad.
This just shows the sad truth that Hollywood is not the only culture that causes people to go to extremes to be considered beautiful. It’s every culture, every where. Obsession with beauty and “perfection” is a human characteristic, not a Hollywood characteristic.
In places like Argentina, butts are considered an important part of beauty. At least, more important than in the United States. So while women there won’t starve themselves to be size 0, they will go to extremes to have a good butt. It was so sad for me to hear the supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio say that she wasn’t happy with herself because her butt isn’t big enough when so many girls see her as perfection…she couldn’t see that in herself.
Same with this woman. I truely feel for her two children and their loss. May she rest in peace.
Most of the girls here in Argentina wants to be skinny. We are in the 2nd country with more cases of anorexia in the world. So being skinny here is very important. The big and round butts are more an obsession of the men magazines.
Maybe I’m generalizing. I know that it’s true for Brazil, but maybe it’s not in Argentina.
But I do still think that all people are obsessed with beauty and perfection, not just “Hollywood.”
Yup, I am from Argentina too and while we do wanna have perfect round butts there is still a huge obsession with being super skinny. You will simply notice that but walking around the streets or going to a bar. The media is definetely thinner than in many European countries or US (even in Cali) It is really sad.
I used to teach drama at school and once at lunchtime saw this 8 year old who was barely eating, so I approached her and asked her if she was not feeling good. Her friends answered “no, she is just eating less cause she is fat”. True story. Awfully sad.
Talking bout stupid way to die, I feel so sorry for her family, the hardest part goes to one that stay around
As unfortunate as this is, I can’t really feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for her kids to grow up without a mother. She thinks that this is more important than her family and she let vanity take over her life.
That’s exactly how i feel.
word!
agreed
I do think she deserves some empathy. You don’t know her circumstances, or if she was just being vain. To go under a knife takes a lot of courage and most people wouldn’t do it; there must have been something really pushing her to do it.
How do you know she didn’t grow up in a household where her mother verbally abused her and made her feel insecure for life? (this is typical of beauty queens btw, because they have stage moms that push them into pageants at a young age)
Or how do you know she hasn’t been suffering from mental disorders like depression or body dysmorphism disorder?
She could have just been vain. But I don’t think it’s fair to assume that immediately. Just think: would a normal person want to get butt surgery? Something happened in her life that made her think that was the most important thing to do, and that thing may not have been her fault.
If you suffer from such horrible things there is proper medical care. And as far as i know any plastic surgery implies talking to a psychologist before doing it, precisely to avoid situations where people have surgery due to mental illness such as body dysmorphic disorder or depression and so on. So either something like this did not happen and than this might as well be malpraxis, or if she was checked she was probably declared healthy and apt for surgery. Of course we are not happy about her death, of course there can be many explanations, but since her closest peers admit to her obession about looks i think we can assume that she had it coming. Personally, i would blame those who should have pointed her into the right direction, if you trully are mentaly ill it’s certain that you do not know it, but those who are close to you will notice.
In my experience, the people that need psychiatric care the most seek it out the least. No one likes to admit there’s something wrong with them. Most of the time, it’s parents and friends who push the person to see a psychologist. But if the parents and friends don’t see that the person has a disorder and attribute it to “bad personality,” or are the source of the disorder, well, then it’s just a really sad case.
And in some cultures, seeing a psychologist is equated with you admitting you have something like schizophrenia (completely detached from reality), and having schizophrenia is equated with having leprosy. So no one is really running to go see a psychologist any time soon. And if they have to, they lie and lie and lie.
But anyway, I understand that not everyone is going to completely empathize with her. It’s just, someone earlier said they can’t feel sorry for her at all, and that’s really sad, because I really feel that something caused her to do this. The fact that she was “obsessed” with her appearance prior indicates some kind of disorder. However, she can be blamed for ultimately going under the knife when she has 2 kids at home.
It’s just a terrible case. And I hope that women who want to get plastic surgery will really look at the risks and the qualifications of their plastic surgeon, because this isn’t the first time it’s happened.
Whoops I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to write so much.
Blimey O’Riley
Im from Argentina. It wasnt butt implants. It was a PMMA injection in that area. That sustance infiltrated in the bloodstream causing a lung embolism Media are really obsessed with that part of the body here.I agree with all the comments of what a stupid way to die.
Wait. Someone else here said in Argentina, people don’t care about butts. I thought they did, but the person said girls there want to be skinny.
Which is true? Do Argentinians think butts are important, or not?
A great philosophical question of our time
Haha Zoi that made me laugh! I was just really curious.
Thanks for everyone who responded. I get it now. But I must say, it’s really hard to be very thin, have a tiny waist, and yet still have a good sized, toned butt. Very rare, imo.
We DO CARE about butts a LOT here. But, we still wanna be super skinny. Also great boobs, super tiny waist and a doll face. No, not a beauty obsessed country at all :-S
that’s right, what we argentinians want is extremely long and skinny legs and a big firm butt, flat stomach and big boobs
I’m Argentinian as well, an although women do care about having a nice and toned butt and boobs (and when I mean nice I do not mean big), being is skinny is the rule when it comes to body image, and yes people are obssessed with being super skinny and with fitness in general. As someone said above, it is true that we are one of the countries with more cases of anorexia. Yet it is true that in most other Lationamerican countries (and I’m sorry if I’m generalizing a bit too much here) women tend to aim at being more curvy, that is, still slim but with curves and less ruler-looking. Anyway, the tendency to be skinny is now each time more present everywhere, no matter what country you are in, IMO.
Its a weird country.I would say that 70 % of the woman are skinny or want to be and a 30% wants to look like the cover of a playboy magazine.
Here in Argentina in general, girls are skinny, but they have butt and boobs, but we still are very very skinny. Almost everyone goes to the gym and eat healty. If you came herer you will be surprised because in the streets most of girls seems to be models, very thin, but they are born with big butts, so they allways have it, even though the are skinny.
I agree with the other girls, its sad to leave a family and kids behind because of something so…unimportant.
I almost lost a friend because of liposuction. She was 20 and the doctor accepted to do the surgery when she only had to loose 7-8 pounds. When I asked her ‘why didn’t you come to me for a diet?’ (I am a clinical dietician) she replied ‘all the models around the world are doing this, diet and exercise are not enough’…
I’ve read and heard that lots of people die or get seriously ill from implants (breast implants, but I would guess the bum ones aren’t that different), but they are making so much money out of it they don’t tell people this. I came across a website where lots of women had had implants and had got seriously ill. Those that were pregnant while sick passed it on to their children. Some became so sick they could never live normally again even after removing the implants. I’ve also seen a documentary about the same topic. I think the documentary was called ‘Absolutely Safe’, but I can’t be sure. Unfortunately, I can’t find the website I’m thinking of.
This st0ry is quite sad but I think it just sh0ws a valuable less0n in life: l0ve y0urself f0r wh0 y0u are, g0d made every0ne beautiful and unique in their 0wn way and we sh0uldnt try t0 alter his creati0ns.
I hate for anyone to suffer from the complications of surgery, but that if the reality of plastic surgery. It should never be taken lightly. The price of beauty is just that. A price that many pay to much for weather it is debt or death.
No soy argentina, soy uruguaya.
Very sad… Body obssesion sometimes causes death…
damn i know i’m late but this is sad. you can have family and friends to help a person that has an obsession with something but doesn’t mean that person would take the help and unfortunately she didn’t take the help. i feel bad she had to get butt implants to maintain her figure but the really sad part is her twins won’t have a mother anymore. guess goes to show that there are other women who want that curvier figure and would do anything for it, even if it cost them their life. it’s like women can’t win on either side because we are told to look a certain way in order to be beautiful. it’s like, if you’re skinny you’re beautiful but if you’re curvy you’re fat. or if you’re curvy with hips, breast, and booty, you’re beautiful and if you don’t look like that then you are considered ugly. reading this makes me realize all women need to look inside themselves and see there are beautiful and worth something. we shouldn’t have to change who we are just to live up to society’s standards of beauty. damn this is sad.
