Cindy Crawford: “I Look Too Healthy”… to Be a Supermodel in 2009

US former supermodel Cindy Crawford says she would have little chance of making it big in the fashion business today with her curvy figure, a German celebrity magazine reported Tuesday.
“I would not have become a supermodel in 2009. I look too healthy,” Crawford told Bunte.
“A body like mine with big breasts, normal thighs and toned upper arms” is no longer what the industry is looking for, she said.
Crawford, 43, said she was happy with her physique but worried about the effects of ageing like wrinkles and bulges.
“That’s why I like being in my 40s so much — being at peace with yourself, knowing about your strengths beyond being pretty,” she said.
Crawford, known for her trademark beauty spot above her upper lip, briefly studied chemical engineering before becoming one of the world’s most popular cover girls in the 1980s and 1990s.

Height: 5′9” / 175 cm
Weight: 130 lbs / 59 kg (probably a bit more these days)
Maybe compared to a model she is curvy, but compared to the average woman I don’t think she is at all.
Curvy means having curves.
Does she have curves? Yes – defined waist, boobs and curvy hips.
Therefore, she’s curvy.
The average woman most likely ISN’T curvy, since the most common shape is rectangular (50%). Blocky, borderline overweight women =/= curvy.
And yes, the average woman, standing 5′4 tall, and size 12 – most likely borderline overweight if not way into that area.

I thought there were more pears too. I would say 5′4 and a size 12 is almost certainly overweight.
Yeah, the most common body type for women is the pear, at least it is in the UK
Where exactly did you come up with your statistics of the 50% rectangular body type? I haven’t read about that in any medical journals.
i agree with your definition of curvy completely. but cindy does not fitr that. she is evry rectangular
I think she’s still about 130 and a size 4/6. The supermodels of the 1990s had the best figures, the waif look is interesting but the girls are so young (majority under 22) that they kind of lack personality and just aren’t STUNNING like they used to be.
I know the fashion industry wants to be always changing but why not go back to girls with a little more zip?
I agree! The “supermodels” of the 90’s (Cindy, Linda, Christy, Naomi, ect.) would all probably be considered too “curvy” compared to today’s standards, even though they were all at a thin, yet healthy shape. I know Naomi is still modeling, but that probably has more to do with the drama she brings more than anything else.
I agree, I miss the days of Cindy, Linda, Christy and Naomi. In my opinion, they were even more beautiful than the waifs you see on today’s catwalks. Gorgeous and interesting women.
And Cindy looks phenomenal. She’s always been an excellent role model for young women because of her fitness and her intelligence. She really is the whole package.
I also agree, models in the 90s were amazing and they still look gorgeous. On the other hand kate moss (the queen of waifs)looks aged and tired, although younger than the others, probably of malnutrition.

I completely disagree with her. I don’t think she could have been a supermodel in 2000. That was the peak of the anoerxic/heroin chic era (which started in the 90’s). But ever since then there has been a slow and steady backlash against that trend. She would have no problem being a successful model today if she was younger.
There are plenty of world-famous models now with boobs, hips and thighs. If you ask an average person to name a model, they will probably say Adriana or Doutzen, Bar, or Gisele, not some emanciated runway model. And all four of those models are the highest payed…not emanciated runway models.
To disregard those facts makes her appear bitter to me. Maybe she wishes that she could have continued her modeling career longer, or that she could go back to modeling now? I don’t know.
But arent’s all these girls VS models? I do think Cindy would find her place in the industry if she were younger, but it’s true that most of the girls on the runway of high-fashion shows are veeery thin, gaunt even, where as Cindy had that swimsuit model vibe.
I think there’s a difference between Victoria secret models, and runway models, and that’s what she was. She couldn’t be one of “those” models.
I don’t think Bar is but I may be wrong. Never saw her in the past.
Also she didn’t’ say she wanted to be a runway model, she said she didn’t thinks he would be successful in the fashion world, and I’m saying she could be, even more successful than runway models, as the curvier models typically tend to be because they are more attractive to the general public, not just fashion designers.
Do I think her figure would be turned down from run way shows? Yes. But do I think she still would have made millions and became a household name? Yes.

yeah, but I’m thinking VS models probably do high-fashion cause they are already famous as underwear and bikini models….I mean, for example, someone like Marissa Miller, with her age and her breasts, or someone the size of Karolina Kurkova would never do high-fashion if they weren’t already famous top models
There’s a huge difference. The runway models have no boobs…who is going to buy a bra when you can’t see it in action?! I look at the bras in VS and think…hmm..maybe my tatas will look like Doutzen’s or Gisele’s. I think Cindy would be a VS model if she were younger. She’s too big (i cringe even saying that since she has a body most 20 year olds would kill for) compared to the models on the runway…and really…who wants to look like a walking skeleton?

She is gorgeous here- as usual but yeah- she’s right. She would have to drop at least 15 lbs to be hired again (and good for her for not wanting that).
She’s had her chance to shine and she sure did. Plus, it’s not like she isn’t still on commercials or ads, right? She’s still reelin’ in the money from her, well, beauty.

She looks really good, toned up and stuff. It depends on the models: if it’s Karl Kagerfield who makes cloths for 12 year old boys bodies, yes, she right, she doesn’t have a body like that. In fact, she has a fantastic female body and any men would be glad if their wives would look like Cindy!
She is right, I mean compare her to Miranda Kerror Gisele, she’s got 10 to 15 pounds on them I’m guessing. HOWEVER, I think she’s perfect, much slimmer than the average woman, but long and lean and healthy. I don’t care about the movement for more “real” or plus sized or whatever women, but I do think it would be much,much better for models to look like her today.
