Kate Upton: “It was considered a great thing to have a curvy body to fill out a bathing suit”

On whether she always wanted to model:

I knew nothing about fashion growing up, because in Florida you just wear bikinis and flip-flops. But kids can be cruel, and they used to make fun of me for having long legs and bushy eyebrows. My mom would flip through magazines and say, “Look, all these models have that too.” So I decided I wanted to be a model.

On whether she was ever told to lose weight:

All. The. Time. At first I tried to diet to become their image, but eventually I realized that it wasn’t realistic—that this is just the shape of my body. So I had to block them out. I think that the people who are the loudest about wanting to change you are the people with the least amount of vision and creativity.

On people saying she doesn’t have the right look:

Where I grew up, it was considered a great thing to have a curvy body to fill out a bathing suit. For that to be a negative was so confusing to me. And besides, when I started working, I was booked constantly, mostly for catalog work. So when people were saying, “Oh, she doesn’t have the right look for a model,” I thought, Then why am I working every single day? There are so many different directions you can take in the modeling industry, so many ways to be successful.

  1. I get it she has boobs, but I just have ahard time thinking of her as curvy- she has such a straight thick waist and no butt. Maybe she’s curvy by some deifnfitions but her body shape is really not what i think of when i think of a top earning swimsuit model at all.

  2. I think she’s really beautiful and has greats breasts and legs. However to be considered curvy I think there has to be a difference between waist and hips, and preferably a bigger behind too.

  3. I think she’s cute and kind of has a normal attitude. It’s nice that she is one of the few models that never lost a ton of weight, even though people hated on her for it. *cough cough* Gigi *cough*

  4. She definitely isn’t a traditional model or classically attractive in any sense. She has a trashy appeal (she just looks so harsh) and has parlayed that into a career- as long as there are lower class mens magazines and commercials targeted to the lower class her type will be employed.

  5. It would appear I’m in the minority here but I think she’s very cutesy beautiful. I feel like people tend to have a very rigid view of what’s beautiful and it’s usually associated with a low whr, a lot of angularity in the face, and to be honest, most women don’t look like that! She looks happy and less uniform than plenty of the women that are constantly called beautiful and to me that’s better!

    • i think she’s beautiful too. to me, she’s a much better example of changing beauty standards than plus size models–a normal, healthy sized woman with a different body type getting work as a model. but she gets so much criticism because you’re allowed to tear people down as long as it’s not about weight

  6. Actually, the reason why her body type is not my favourite is its lack of curves besides her boobs. Regarding weight, I’ve always found her to be rather skinny on the lower body, so I really don’t know where she’s coming from with her quote.
Not that it’s a problem though, more power to different body types in the industry and kudos to her for not letting anyone put her down.
