Gabourey Sidibe, Photoshop Job

Was Gabourey Sidibe’s Skin Lightened in Elle Magazine?

Gabourey-Sidibes-Skin-Lightened-in-Magazine - Was Gabourey Sidibe's Skin Lightened in Elle Magazine?

Let’s see what The Telegraph has to say:

The 27-year-old is one of four celebrities to appear on four separate covers for its 25th anniversary issue. In the image Sidibe’s skin appears to be several shades lighter than her normal colour.

The magazine said the four celebrities – Sidibé, actresses Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, and Lauren Conrad, the reality star – were chosen as examples of young women who were “changing the world”.

ELLE has also been criticised because each of the other three cover girls are shown in full length photographs while Sidibe’s image is cropped at chest level. In a statement the magazine said that “nothing out of the ordinary” had been done to the photograph.

“We have four separate covers this month and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more or less than the others” it read.
“We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is. We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons.”

What do you guys think? Is it just the exposure of the picture or did they purposely lighten Gabourey’s skin? Elle Magazine surely is the champion of Photoshop!

You know what the saddest thing about this cover is? that they wanted to showcase young women changing the world, and they picked four actresses! How about young women who are scientists, doctors, social activitst, civil leaders, legal rights experts, teachers!? I can think of so many more young women who changing the world in a much more meaningful way than these four girls.

LOL! Yeah I agree – I find it really insulting to our gender that they think megan fox, lauren conrad, etc are examples of strong women making changes in the world!

COMPLETELY agree. What has the world come to?

NOT AT ALL! Blacks skins seem lighter under spotlights.

It absolutely does not! Only on amatuer flash cameras because people don’t understand settings and aperture. And photographers don’t use “spotlights”. If you’re a good photographer you can take a picture without this happening. Plus lighting comes with gels that can be adjusted to accentuate skin tones. If that were even the case, wouldn’t her other covers have had the same effect and there are tools in photoshop to darken her back to her original shades. Google her Ebony cover. And its not a tight shot like this.

Not true, most professional photographers use flash or back light. Completely untrue. The reason she is at different light levels is because of the exposure setting of the camera (and or photoshop) and the back lighting. As you can see in the photo where she is darker, she is wearing a dark outfit and the girl behind her is over exposed. The girl behind her is brighter and thus if they (or the camera) increased the exposure to lighten her up (to make the picture lighter), the girl behind her would have been way over exposed. On the picture on… Read more »

Unfortunately lightening the skin is a “normal” procedure, just like making everything thinner. Didn’t Nelly Furtado even mention it in a song?
“Paint my face in your magazines, make it look whiter than it seems”.
They will keep on doing so until people will complain and boycott those magazines.

I really don’t care about the photoshop of her colour. But what makes me furious is that the magazine is trying to tell us that these women are changing the world! How? By their scientific discoveries, did they find a new medicine, wrote the next book that is nominated for Novel prize?

agreed..i said the same thing in my comment. Clearly Elle didn’t look very far behind the confines of their own building to find influential young women. very sad, but we live in a world that value celebrity and money over anything else 🙁

Exactly. She’s an actress, and a terribly unhealthy, morbidly obese one at that. It’s just as bad as idolizing someone who has anorexia. :-/ It doesn’t make her a bad person or less worthy of respect, but it does make her less of a role model. If she were a scientist, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like because her discovery would be at the forefront! But she’s an actress, so SHE – and her health – are at the forefront.

How is she changing the world? Reassuring morbidly obese people that it’s okay to be unhealthily fat? Seems fail to me. None of these four girls are “changing the world”.

NO, they aren’t. “Elle”, this was one pathetic article.

I dont’ blame them for cutting out her body…sorry.

But the lighting, as a black woman, is insulting. Yes, there is lighting but MANY magazines are able to use lighting without affecting the shade of her skin so dramatically…especially black focused magazines.

Now, I don’t know about changing the world. I agree, there are better woman that could have been featured.

I don’t read such magazines and will therefore only comment on the photo. It’s overexposed as whole, her hair is also medium brown there.. I don’t see the big deal.

Why is she even on the cover? She was in ONE movie!

seriously, we wouldn’t even remember her name if she wasn’t morbidly obese.

sad but true!

Wow, what an incredibly, insensitively rude comment!

Oh, don’t be so politically correct. She did say it was ‘sad but true’.

And that makes the comment less offensive because…I see this girl on here all the time putting people down, and she really has no room to speak; fake!

I do believe is the lighting of the shoot. My colour variates soo much in pictures!! But seriously, changing the world?? who? megan fox? lauren conrad?? no, no, just no!! I study with many young women who are really making diference, reasearching and trying to find new ways of saving countries written culture! these girls on this covers are not doing anythiing but making money for themselves.

Lightened or not, bad cover or not… This poor girl is simply ugly. They can do anything they want, she’s one of the uggliest woman i’ve ever saw.
She’s very talented though. So the good thing for her is when producers call her for a movie, it’s not for her beauty, but for her talent.
As long as they don’t propose her fat girl roles, just like with Precious….

I work in the magazine industry and am always amazed when people complain about covers…WE MAKE WHAT YOU’LL BUY. There is no conspiracy to damage the soul of womankind. When we put activists on covers they don’t sell magazines and we risk losing our jobs. Unless, of course, the activist is very pretty. Consumers will buy more copies of a magazine with Angelina Jolie or Keira Knightley on the cover than most other women on the planet. It’s a business not a charity.

Who wants to buy a magazine with precious on the cover!… What a terrible mistake. I bet this issue won’t sell at all, thank God they have the 2 other covers to make them a profit– with exception to Megan Fox, as we all know by now she’s nearly universally hated by women. And the only thing I would use Megan Foxs cover as is newspaper to sit at the bottom of my budgies cage to be covered in feces. As for them lightening up Gaboureys skin tone and leaving out a lage portion of her body, well this was… Read more »

Seriously what difference did it make to lighten her skin tone. They could’ve made her white and she’d still be butt ugly. Photoshop can’t fix her facial features. That nose, those lips, her eyes, ugh.

I would only buy the one with Megan on the cover. Don`t care what anyone thinks, just telling the truth. I like Megan, and i buy what is pleasing to my eye.

the person i like is lauren. at least she is doing something besides getting drunk or flashing their underwear. that’s just me and it’s sad what they did to gabourey but what do you expect when they see a big dark black woman? colorism will never change.

it may SEEM like they lightened her skin but let’s think of something here. they have extremely bright lights and big reflective boards so they’re won’t be shadows. i have black friends and i take pics of all of us and they usually look lighter as a result of the flash. i doubt they lightened her skin.

there are just so many things wrong with this article, for one I have no idea why Lauren conrad is apart of this and also the precious actress is lighter and has a close up picture which makes no sense with the rest of the other covers.. These are not exactly the women I would choose to represent the women of change movement.. it’s quite ironic

it’s the lighting in the shoot… her hair, also looks lighter…
