Name: Betty Brosmer and later, Betty Weider
Also known as: ‘The girl with the impossible waist”
Height: 5’5” / 165 cm
Age today: 81
Occupation: pin-up model, author, trainer
Also known for:
- being the co-founder of Shape Magazine
- being the wife of famous bodybuilder Joe Weider
Before the age of photo editing, Betty stood out with her unique proportions depicting an hourglass shape with an impossible waist, measuring only 18 inches / 46 cm. But although Betty’s shape was admired by many and the beautiful blonde had a great career as a pin-up model (and later as a trainer and author), there was a lot of speculation at the time (1950s-1960s) regarding the methods Betty used in order to achieve her hourglass shape. While some say that corset training played a role in transforming her body, others say that the model opted for a waist reduction surgery, a procedure that alters the shape of the ribcage (and moves internal organs in the process).
What do you think of Betty’s body shape and how it compares to the current standards of beauty?

34 year-old Zooey Deschanel is featured in the current issue of Lucky Magazine, where she talks about style and dressing for your shape – From Lucky:
Dressing for your body:
“If you look at anyone with great style—Jackie Onassis, Audrey Hepburn—they have certain silhouettes that they don’t really stray from. It’s not like Audrey Hepburn was running around in a bunch of giant shoulder-padded dresses. I have narrow shoulders and a small rib cage, so some things just swallow me up and make me look frumpy.”
You won’t catch her in blousy ’80s cuts (“not flattering, in my opinion”) or certain colors. “I hate to say it, but chartreuse is an ugly color—it just is,” she says, appearing momentarily concerned that she might alienate some militant faction of chartreuse constituents. And forget about anything too revealing. “Daisy Dukes are not for people over 30. I’m just going to go out on a limb and say that right now.”

On constantly being scrutinized:
There is a lot of pressure that comes with it. But there’s also the pressure to be a good role model for women and have a normal, healthy body. Miss Panettiere adds, “But I love being my height and size, and representing a normal girl and a different body type.

On how she is PRO body diversity:
“One of the things I can’t stand the most is all the fashion magazines where all the women look exactly the same. I train everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Gwyneth Paltrow, you know, and I’m a totally different body type. I think there needs to be more emphasis in art and entertainment and fashion on all different body shapes.”
On whether her New York clients skip workouts during Fashion Week:
“I don’t think anybody would skip a workout this week. They’re more like in the gym early, to get their sweat before they do hair or makeup or anything like that. This is not a week to skip the gym. I taught a master class this morning and it was like packed to the walls.”
… says 38 year-old celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson.
