Serena Williams Gets Naked on the Cover of ESPN Magazine

Serena Williams Gets Naked on the Cover of ESPN Magazine… and brings the quote(s) of the day:

‘My thighs… I think they’re too big,’ she has said. ‘And also my arms. I think they’re too muscular. They’re too thick.

‘Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and am, like, I want to lose my inner thigh. I’ve got to do an hour of cardio today, or whatever. I try not to do it, but the insecurity comes back sometimes.

‘I want women to know that it’s okay. You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out.’

So we’re looking at a voluptuous, athletic and not-so-photoshopped woman on the cover of a magazine… wow, all these at once – it doesn’t happen very often.

Christina Hendricks Is on a Diet

Christina Hendricks Is on a Diet

Oh oh… all you curvy lovers are probably a little worried – Will Christina lose her famous curves? Well, let’s hear the details!

Don’t worry, January Jones–Christina Hendricks has no intention of losing her curves. At an Emmy after-party on Sunday, the Mad Men actress told People that Christina’s “has gone on a diet” to prepare for her wedding. Her advice to her co-star: “Not to go too far, because if she loses her curves it will be a very sad day.”

Good thing Christina is totally content with how she looks. She told SELF, “My healthiest habit is keeping positive about my body at whatever stage it is–being confident and celebrating who I am at the moment.”

The sexy ’60s office manager–whose husband said she’s “changing people’s view of what’s beautiful”–did admit to switching up her diet, but not for her wedding, rather, a life change. Keep reading for the details!

Christina is a self-professed foodie, even though she grew up in a household where her mom made “very much Southern ’70s cooking, like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and quiche.” It wasn’t until she moved away from home that she realized there was a whole world of food out there. “Like vegetables!” she said. “My mom didn’t like them, so she hardly ever cooked them–and when she did, they would be overcooked. Now when she comes over and I make fresh veggies, she says, ‘These are the most delicious things I’ve ever had!’ So I’ve turned my mom on to vegetables, which is good.”

To stay healthy, Christina gets “inspired by” the seasonal recipes in cooking magazines and on sites like epicurious.com. “Otherwise, I’ll just go to the grocery store and look around for what’s beautiful and pick that up. Like rhubarbs!”

As for her diet, she started it “just for me, for my life. I feel like I need more energy, so I’m trying to stay away from tons of carbs and eat more protein.”

She also exercises three times a week with a trainer–and her fiancee! “It’s amazing how quick an hour can go by when you work out with someone you love,” she said. Their typical workout includes well-rounded cardio and strength development. “Working out together makes it fun!”

Christina’s perspective on health and fitness is pretty refreshing, huh? Not that she sees herself as a poster girl for curvy woman on TV. “At first, I thought people were calling me out and it made me feel uncomfortable that they were focused on it,” she admitted. “Then when I realized it was all positive and it was actually helping other people, it started making me feel great.”

New Interview with Plus-Size Model Crystal Renn

September 22, 2009 in Hot Models by Versus

crystal renn intrview

GlamChic recently did an interview with plus-size beauty Crystal Renn, where they talked about promoting healthy bodies, future projects and style icons. Here’s a part of it:

How would you describe the typical model’s fashion week diet?
Whether or not you have a weight problem during fashion week it’s a mental game that is imposed on these girls and so people in fashion week eat less and they believe they’re natural, however I don’t have to do such things.

We we’re pleased to see that Glamour has recently been embracing plus-size models and applauded British Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman’s case against too skinny models, but are there any other woman’s magazines out there that you think convey a healthy body image to young women?
Let me just tell you something about Glamour, they were the only people who ever called my agency and said this girl has a problem. They are all about health and promoting women’s issues. There is a growing interest in healthy bodies and I have seen that even in Vogue. And the fact that I have done Vogue and been able to do it is a sign of change. I commend them for using me. Glamour, I have to say is one of the leaders of the pack. I remember I was completely ill on that shoot when my disorder got worse and they called my agency and said something is very wrong with her.

Were you angry?
At the time I was really embarrassed because someone had figured me out. They called it and brought it to light. I wasn’t only not only not pleasing my agency but I wasn’t pleasing Glamour. When I became a healthy model like I am now, they were one of the first people to shoot me at this size and that says something. I am happy to be associated with them because there message is the same as mine. They really care about their readers and you can tell.

What’s next for you?
My goals would be to continue speaking about body competence and telling women they don’t have to look just one way. What’s naturally next would be to design a clothing line of some sort because I don’t think my taste is out their for curvier women. I have rock n’ roll taste that should be available for size 12 and above. I would love to go into the beauty industry and be the face of a makeup brand. It’s what women want to see. I love makeup and I find it very cool and it’s an arena I want to experience.

Plus-Size Model Crystal Renn Releases Book Called “Hungry”

Plus Size Model Crystal Renn Releases Book Called Hungry | celebrity weight measurements

Plus-Size Model Crystal Renn (23) just released a book about her journey in the modeling world, a journey from size 0 to size 12: “Hungry – A Young Model’s Story: Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves”.

Here’s her summarized story: At age 14, Crystal told that she had to lose 9 inches from her hips in order to be a succesful model. As a result, Crystal went from 175 lbs to 95 lbs in just 2 years. At 16, Crystal dealt with anorexia and was a size 0(US). But then, there was a turning point:

At 17 my body completely rebelled. I couldn’t loose more weight and I realized I was going to die for a job. The next day I was completely chastised by my agency for my size and one agent pulled me aside and said, “There’s an option for you. You can either go plus-size or do commercial work.” And I asked, “What’s plus-size modeling? I’ve never heard of that.” And she said, “Well it means you can be whatever size you want and model.” But she said it was for old women! But for whatever reason, everything made sense and I knew this was the route I had to take. I went and had a salad with salmon and walnuts and olive oil. I gave into what my body needed. I could be healthy and happy and still model., says Crystal.

… and so, she was inspired to share her story in a book:

“I’d like to see everyone take on the attitude that there are women of all different shapes and sizes as `the beauty ideal,’ and that it’s not one type or another. There are women who are naturally a size 2 — you can’t forget them, and that’s discrimination the other way,” Renn said. “All women bring something different to the table and we have to appreciate them all.”

Some in the fashion, modeling and magazine industries have been receptive to the idea, she said, noting that she’s still working with her fuller figure in Vogue, Glamour, on the runway with Jean Paul Gaultier and in ads for Dolce & Gabbana. ”I believe there is a cycle to everything — Wall Street, the housing market, and modeling, too. Back in the Victorian days, it was all about a full figure, in the ’50s, it was about the boobs, in the ’80s it was shoulders and in the ’90s it was waifs,” she said. “It can only go up from here.”, says Crystal.
