26 year-old Crystal Renn, who shed a lot of lbs in the past years, is still trying to convince her followers that her weight loss was unintentional:

People often call me a hypocrite ‘oh, she lost weight’. I didn’t choose this, I didn’t ask for this, this happened!

What a load of BS

alyssa

Oh #*&$ off!

Crystal is a size 8 US which is what her body normally is. She used to starve herself to be a 0-2 model, and stuff herself to be a plus size model.

You know what the effing fashion industry needs? Effing healthy, moderate women, who are 6,8 and 10.
No. More. Extremes.

I’m so SICK of women being told how to look.
Why don’t we give every woman on earth a pass for 2013 and start critiquing men for a change?

Utterly obscene. Her body is her own, and she owes nothing to anyone but herself

joy

I honestly don’t even slightly buy that she’s a US size 8. She looks WAY skinnier than that. Unless they are photoshopping the hell out of her, I call BS. I could probably believe that she is a UK 8 but definitely not a US 8. I’ve wondered if she insists she’s that size as a way to deflect any frustrations people might have about her weight loss.

Yeah, she’s WAY smaller than a US 8. Especially considering she would look smaller in person since the camera always adds lbs

She’s 5′ 9″ and her arms aren’t skinny – they flatten against her side like mine do. Her legs aren’t bony either. At her current weight, she looks like an ordinary woman I would see on the street. Just, regular, neither curvy, nor skinny.

Let it be.

Yes! I love her moderate size. You can tell in her arms that she’s about “Average” I guess. I think she looks beautiful. Still statuesque and beyond your typical woman, but a decent size that isn’t super skinny or super fat.

So just because she was a plus sized model she’s not allowed to lose weight? The sad thing is, she would probably still be considered a plus size model…

MissMarilyn

No that’s not the case at all. If she were any other plus sized model I doubt as many people would care, but she USED to be a skinny model THEN gained weight and went plus sized. During this time she made a big freaking deal about how much she hated being thin and how unhealthy it was… she even wrote a book about it (the title of the book is Hungry). Huge freaking body acceptance crusade about how happy she is being bigger. But apparently not because like a year later she loses all the weight again. So I’m… Read more »

she also talked about having an eating disorder to get so thin and I’m pretty sure said a size 12 was her ‘natural’ size and how important it was to her that she go back to her natural size so a lot of people are probably worried about an ED relapse as well

Jennifer

Thanks for all of this background info 🙂
If size 12 is her natural size, she should stick with it, because imo she looks wayyyyyy more beautiful (facial features wise) at the bigger weight than she does thin.

She helped me come to accept some things about myself, but I would like to point out that she didn’t go and lose “all the weight” again. She seems in between. She’s not plus size like she was when she was preaching, but she’s not bone thin like she was with the eating disorder. She seems to have reached a balancing point, and I hope she’s healthy.

Liv

I always thought she and her book were about fighting back… she had an ED… she’s been working on herself… she was saying that It’s not healthy to starve yourself… so what she gained weight and lost it over a long period of time and became even more healthy. I felt Hungry was about her struggle with the love her of body at any size and to keep loving your body even on your “fat” days or when you gain a bit then lose it. Everyone struggles and I never have felt she was lying or full of it when… Read more »

As a person who was struggling with an eating disorder when her book came out I thought she was super inspiring at the time. But if she wasn’t happy at that weight than she should have said so. I do not know anyone who is able to lose so much weight without working hard. It doesn’t happen just “by aciddent” even with ED recovery. With ED recovery you gain weight, and then as your body balances out itself and your metabolism gets back into gear you lose like maybe 10 more pounds. but that’s it. if she’s losing weight in… Read more »

I’ve been struggling with an ED for a long time and in order of my recovery I did NOT weigh myself and even though I ate healthy I gained about 65lbs. So when I started weighing myself again I realised that I was now on the edge of being overweight. I started working out again and have lost 22lbs since. I am now healthier than ever and I will probably continue to lose another 10-20lbs.

My point being: You can lose weight during your recovery and still don’t fall back into disordered behavior.

MissMarilyn

@Charlotte thats true, but you made a conscious effort to lose that weight in a healthy way (congrats by the way). I’m not saying Crystal cannot have lost that weight healthily, I actually believe that she did. I just wish she would say so instead of claiming it happened by accident

I forgot how unhealthy she was when she was over weight. I guess her problem is that she was sticking up for being an overweight model and now that she is healthy again, she still wants to say she is ‘plus size’ when she isn’t even close. She is certainly much smaller than a size 8. She really should come clean that being over weight is a dangerous unhealthy eating disorder. She should also state that this is her new size, she is healthy, and she wants to be an inspiration for people who are over weight that they can… Read more »

I don’t necessarily think she’s full of it. A lot of people gain a lot of weight throughout ED recovery, and then lose some of it when they relearn how to eat normally, which does take years. She definitely doesn’t look anywhere near underweight in that video.

But she could just be in denial, and have a new set of unhealthy behaviors. Who knows?

Mia

I have no idea what to believe, but I will say this: I like her current size. She isn’t rail thin, like a typical runway model, but she also isn’t large enough to fit in with the rest of the plus-sized models. To me, she is a “normal” size (whatever the hell that means), and I wish there were more models out there representing this in-between. This is a happy medium IMO.

Avelyn
Guest
Avelyn

I think when she was anorexic and then got past that her body overcompensated and held onto a lot of excess weight. now that it’s gotten more normalized the weight came off and she’s probably at her natural healthy weight now. I don’t see how an overweight woman exercising and losing some pounds means she’s relapsed into her eating disorder again. my sister recently lost 30+/- pounds just from eating less and exercising more. I think that’s all crystal’s been doing

MissMarilyn
Member
MissMarilyn

This definitely did not happen by accident. Fluctuations are normal and even with ED recovery you might end up gaining a lot of weight and then losing like 10 or so pounds max once you fix your habits and everything is stabilized.

But losing 20+ pounds by accident? nooo. that takes hard work and dedication.

I wish she would just like admit the truth and apologize. She’s just making herself look sillier.

Well, I actually lost 44lbs without trying that hard – over a couple of years though. I obviously had more weight to lose than she ever did (and still have more to go) but I can believe a certain amount can come off without heavy restriction. Just changing your eating habits and lifestyle when you are very overweight can have a big impact and the end goal of that might be more about improving health and happiness than achieving a smaller dress size. I think that’s what she means by ‘I didn’t ask for this’. Though, I don’t know how… Read more »

Yeah, except the key here is that you did it over a couple of years. Small diet changes (cutting out soda, switching from chips and dip to chips and salsa or veggie chips and hummus, etc) can lead to big weight loss in the long term. Just a couple hundred calories per day (say, cutting a 3-a-day soda habit) can really add up. On an unrelated note, she sucks as a model. This post is evidence that she can’t close her mouth. I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say her front teeth are too monstrously… Read more »

I think she had an ed… got treatment, gained weight during her treatment because you usually don’t work out and are focusing on your own inner battles… kept modeling, changed her eating pattern and relationship with food to a healthy one, started working out and eating right and now looks how she is suspose to. She doesn’t look underweight and she isn’t over weight. I think she looks great. I like her, she’s weird looking. She lost is slowly…

i agree. i also think that with an ED you’re pushing ur body to work against its natural way, so u’re shifting its natural balance and screwing with the metabolism and basically don’t even know yourself what would your normal weight be with healthy food & exercise because you have developed ED so ur perception of “normal” is distorted and its even worse cos lots of girls develop ED when the body is still changing & growing so u can’t really get a clear vision of what it’ll look like in the end when the “growth” process is done.So though… Read more »

I completely agree. Speaking from experience, you gain a lot of weight in recovery and it does eventually balance out once you re-learn how to eat properly. She looks really healthy right now and I’m glad if she is taking better care of her body, I feel bad that she is so judged.

I personally think that she looked best when she was a little chubby. Crystal did a lot of work when she was more slender than in those pics above, still not the size she’s now though, and she looked great. However, I don’t believe that her weight loss “just happened”. You don’t lose that much weight just like that, without intention to do so. I’m not saying that you’re not allowed to lose weight, but when you try and gain attention and fame through promoting your curves and being a plus size model and once you’re there you lose all… Read more »

Watching that interview makes me believe that it hasn’t all been intentional. She is about accepting whatever you have and I completely agree with her about the ‘real women have curves’ thing being offensive and her being a plus size model was never meant to say ‘plus size is best’ (just as when I say *I* prefer a certain size/shape I am not saying it’s objectively best and all others are inferior!). I think her situation can look bad because it has all worked out so well for her – she got work at every size! But, she’s a good… Read more »

I believe this, but why can’t she say that she CHOSE to lose weight?? instead of saying OH ITS JUST AN ACCIDENT IT JUST HAPPENED TO ME. which implies she has absolutely no control over it.

carrie

Agreed. Probably because if she says “it just happened” people won’t give her a hard time because she wants people to believe her body is that thin without really trying. if she said she really tried to lose the weight, people would say she is not accepting herself

just playing devil’s advocate here but i have, more than once, lost 25 lbs without trying at all (going from 120 to 95 at 5’6). granted, i was sick and suffered from bad anxiety during these times but i’m just saying it certainly wasn’t intentional and started to scare me. everyone is different. with yo-yoers, it sometimes seem that once you hit an extreme high or an extreme low, it becomes easier to gravitate towards either point unexpectedly (or for reasons other than hard-core workouts or restrictive eating).

Liv

I didn’t get an “oops it’s all an accident, silly me…” vibe from the interview… I felt she was saying.. I didn’t plan this or set an exact goal weight to reach at a certain time… I felt she is saying “I didn’t plan for it to happen this way…: I always always felt she is saying I have made choices and those have affected my appearance and that is what happened… there was no grand scheme…

I believe a lot of her weight change was her metabolism stabilizing. She used to restrict because she had an ED, and when she went into treatment for it she swung in the other direction. I think after a while she started incorporating healthy habits and her metabolism sped back up and she lost some weight. However, I don’t think that’s ALL of her current weight loss. I think some of it is intentional. But I get her reluctance to admit to it. Some people were so offended by her starting to lose weight that you would think she personally… Read more »

If I hadn’t struggled with an eating disorder myself in the past I totally would cry bullsh*t. But I did the exact same thing myself. I starved myself down to 117 at 5’9 (not saying everyone at this weight/height combo is unhealthy, but it was not natural for me). When I recovered I ballooned up to 170. Over the years as my metabolism and eating/exercise habits have recovered I’ve settled at 133 (I weighed 136 before everything). Weird! Those are similar to my numbers and story!

And to MissMarilyn, who seems very upset that someone could be happy at very different weights, the weirdest thing about recovery is I loved my body at 170 more than my lowest, and I love myself the same at where it is now. That’s all part of it being a mental disorder, how you percieve yourself & feel about yourself is really distorted until you recover.

“If she wants to be thin that’s fine but she should not have lied and made such a big deal about how much she hated it/how much she loved being bigger since in reality she must have actually not liked it that much or she would not have lost weight.” This is what I’m referencing. You can definitely lose weight unintentionally. For example, you can make a concerted effort to eat healthier foods or incorporate more/different exercises into your life without the specific intention of losing weight. However, those changes are likely to cause weight loss. I lost 10lbs after dropping dairy and taking up spinning. I stopped with the dairy because it caused acne and took up spinning because I was bored with my regular gym routine. I wasn’t trying to lose weight, but I did. I don’t think what she was trying to say was that she had no control over her weight loss, necessarily, although I guess it comes across like that. Fact is, she IS a hypocrite. Don’ write a book about how happy you are to be chubby, and then lose a drastic amount of weight. That is called hypocritical.
