Tyra Banks Expands the Definition of Beauty

FP_3204841_RIJ_2009BET_SET1_062809 - Tyra Banks Expands the Definition of Beauty

Tyra Banks just started a new campaign that focuses on extending the definitions of beauty. Because unlike what many media trends, Hollywood, pro-plastic surgery ideologies, Photoshop and others are intending to tell us on permanent or occasional basis , beauty DOES come in various forms, shapes, colors and sizes, it has infinite variations and infinite interpretations. Beauty is not a recipe that requires precise quantities of specific ingredients and it is not a pre-established, standardized formula that we all have to follow.

As Tyra says it, beauty is represented by one’s uniqueness and it is not something you can put inside a box. Let’s hear Tyra’s “PRO beauty diversity” message, straight from the source:

Women of every age, race, religion, and ethnicity have struggled in their lives with the narrow concept of beauty. The reason I created America’s Next Top Model was to show the world that girls of all kinds can be beautiful. Every girl’s unique look is important to me – from the thin, plus-sized, short, very tall, ebony to porcelain skinned, the quirky, clumsy, shy, outgoing and all in between.

It’s not easy though because many people still put beauty into a confining, narrow box. So now, I’m asking women around the world to make a pledge to expand their definition of beauty. To put all types of beauty into the spotlight.  Think outside of the box. It’s time for you to celebrate and help redefine beauty. Let’s rejoice and embrace “non-traditional beauty”.   Pledge that you will look in the mirror and find the unique beauty in you. I also ask that you spread love and positive beauty messages to others. Tell your friend, family member or even a stranger that their atypical features are flawless.

What do you guys think of this initiative?

This is a refreshing breathe of fresh air! I love Tyra.

CLAP CLAP BRAVO!? WOMP WOMP WOOOOOOMPPPP you created America’s Next Top Model to shatter the preconceived notion that models aren’t stupid and so that they shouldn’t be confined to the fashion industry. And she is a very intelligent woman and savvy business man but puhleeeeeaaasse enough with your corny crusades okay. There wearing off thin. If you really “pledge for women to look in the mirror and find the unique beauty in you” you wouldn’t have told Yoanna to tone up when she was a size 2 on ANTM and you would have high fashion models as well as plus size girls co-exist beautifully as winners on ANTM regardless of the fact if you think they are going to be a “big hit” in the fashion industry. I’m sorry Versus if it seems like I bash alot of the celebs you post (I think the post themselves are great) it’s just that some of these stars need to think before they open their big fat yaps when it comes to body image it’s a very sensitive topic.

Natasha, you crack me up. I agree that Tyra’s a smart businesswoman. I have much respect for her in that she built an empire after retiring from modeling.

However….she is NOT the poster child for embracing “unique” beauty. I love ANTM as a source of mindless entertainment, but it sure as hell does not promote a healthy relationship with one’s body. Secondly, Tyra’s own publicized insecurities, narcissism, and flip flopping comments about beauty (while hilarious) do not make her a role model as the embodiment of confident womanhood.

Ultimately, though, while the messenger is waaay less than ideal, the MESSAGE is FIERCE!!!!!!!!

      lol this was funny.
has anyone ever noticed how tyra sort of changes voices on her talk show? she has her “dr. tyra, i’m so educated and know what i’m talking about” voice and then her “girrrrrrlll, i’m tyra and i’m your best girlfriend!!!” voice.

my boyfriend is always joking about that and calls her dr. tyra.

  • Casey

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. I’ve been trying to appreciate beauty outside of my own preferences and tastes.

In a strange way, I’ve found that being able to appreciate many types of beauty, some that are not similar to you, actually leads to feeling more secure within yourself.

Also, I love Tyra. She may have overdone it with the Real Women Have Curves, but she does have a unique, outspoken and intelligent personality, and watching her show I do feel like she tries to use media as a source of empowerment for all women.

  • Jamie

Yeah, I will believe her once she finally admits she had a nose job.

  • lainey

It’s easy for her to preach about how everyone has their own type of beauty when her type of beauty has made her a VS Angel, millions and millions of dollars, fame, her own tv show, etc.

    • Zoi

🙂 I agree, being a VS model helps a lot to accept yourself.

  • cj

    her hair looks awful…

by the way why does Tyra keep bashing other people when they decide to have a nosejob or change the shape of the eyes( like that Asian girl(earlier shows)
when she in FACT change her nose……what a hipocrit u are tyra…

    • Ella

I agree and don’t think she’s too confident about her own looks, which is why I don’t think she’s the right person to send this message even if it is a great message to convey.

I think the show with the Asian girl only showed that Tyra is really ignorant of Asian people. If she thinks all Asian people have single eyelids and changing them to double eyelids means they are ‘trying to be white’ she honestly knows nothing.

  • afluffybunny

I think Tyra is really an intelligent woman…
Some people just fail to see what is good there and think it is alright to hate on celebrities since they are such ” evil ” people cause they have money, fame and success..
Celebrities make their own fame, money and success…so they pretty much deserve those…
what a hard thing to be a celebrity..with people from everywhere judging you all the time…sometimes even when you just want to do something good for people watching you..

  • Claudia

Funny how some people get sensitive only when the cause is directly related to their persona. Or would Tyra embrace this “democratic beauty” cause if she were a white skinny blonde? lol

    • ann

Motives are rarely selfless in this world. I have to agree with you. If she wasn’t having issues with her weight she would not be preaching against the status quo.

  • gen

    Oh, shut up, Tyra…

  • Michelle DD

yeahh, right.. its coming from a woman who was called fat and lost 25 pounds few months later. thanks for the lesson.

  • H

    Pass me the sick bucket..

  • Niva

While I agree that women come in all shapes and sizes and they are all still beautiful, I don’t think Tyra should say she started ANTM for that reason. The past winners (except Whitney) have been rather skinny. I feel like the only reason she chose Whitney was for ratings.
Not to mention the numerous times she’s said a contestant was ‘too pretty,’ really? How can someone be too pretty? I really don’t think it’s fair to say she started ANTM for the purpose of showing other women beauty comes in all forms. Doesn’t seem that way when I watch the show.

  • padme

I just want to say I love her shoes.

  • Mirabela

    Amin to that! 😉

Finally, someone had the courage to demand the truth: every man or woman have some kind of beauty.

    • amazon

rubbish. most of us get up and get on with out lives just fine regardless of preconcieved notions of beauty or any other rubbish. we certainly sitting around waiting on tyra to tell us it was okay to be ordinary!!! the people who might need to hear this are the people she is constantly picking at on ANTM!

  • Kashou

    Hell yeah, Tyra!
