On style:

“Style isn’t when you buy yourself the most expensive things,” she says. “It’s being creative and able to put together what you’ve collected. Growing up,  didn’t have a lot of money, so I got things for, like $2, $3, and made myself look as good as I could. Limitations make you more creative.”

… says Zooey in the April issue of InStyle Magazine.

I don’t like her dull expression

  • serena

Didn’t she grow up in a wealthy family? I could be wrong. But good for her for making the best of what she has. I also live on a strict budget so I can relate. She looks good in vibrant colors like red and bright blue.

    • M

Yeah, her family was wealthy. Her mom is an actress and her dad is a director. They had definitely had money.

    • Sandy

I though the same thing. She and her sister went to a really exclusive/posh school.

  • mmad

That’s sort of ironic, considering she wears the same thing all the time

    • ebby

hahaha! i was thinking the exact same thing. she exclusively wears 50-60’s style clothing

    • MissMarilyn

….so? She’s not talking about wearing a variety of clothing, just not spending a lot of money on clothing. It would only be ironic if she decked herself out in Louis Vuitton every day/other expensive brands.

  • JennM

I am not a fan of her kitschy style, I think it limits her. But I admire her commitment to her style, I am thirty this year and still don’t have a certain look or style, I go out of the house as a hipster one day, and then looking like Jennifer Lopez (in clothing style) the next.

  • Layne

    Go away, Zooey.

  • She’s starting to annoy me, for some reason. She’s cute, but too cute – it doesn’t seem entirely genuine. As for her quote, she’s right – style is most certainly not about how expensive something is, but surely everyone knows that!? I’m one who honestly doesn’t put much effort into creating my own unique ‘style’ but I admire people who do – especially on a tight budget. Zooey’s style seems very narrow to me though – and of course, she has a huge budget now and access to stylists, etc! These photos are so bland too!

    • MissMarilyn

Unfortunately not everyone knows that. I go to a school in a super affluent area and back in middle school you pretty much HAD to wear True Religion jeans, Uggs, and Abercrombie tops. That was “the style”. All of those brands are way too expensive. I know other people who think they dress well because they wear designer clothes but really what is more eye-catching are creative unexpected pieces that still look put together… and these can come at any price.

      • Interesting! I guess you are right – plenty of wealthy people throw on some designer clothes and think that makes them stylish even if it doesn’t suit them at all! Style to me is certainly a lot more than a label or even what’s in fashion – and that just seems logical to me 🙂

    • Emeline

“She’s cute, but too cute – it doesn’t seem entirely genuine” Agreed. She was a little bit quirky before, but not that much

  • KC

    I have no style.

    • amber

Me either. I think the vast majority of ppl don’t have one defining style.

  • Casey

This is one of the few quotes of her’s that I’m not annoyed by.

I agree, style isn’t about buying the most expensive or overpriced clothes. I also want to add, style doesn’t mean fad. Something that is currently popular doesn’t always translate to a good overall style.

And I can relate to being cheap! I hate spending more than $30 bucks on any article of clothing or accessory unless it’s really nice quality (which nowadays is rare). This means a lot of bargain hunting, shopping at bad stores and sifting through piles of clothes to find one thing that looks good.

    • Tisha

I agree with every single word you said. I am not only super cheap but I always test a trend’s staying power before I buy. I don’t want to spend my money to be able to wear an item of clothing for just one season. And you are exactly like me, I don’t spend more than $25-30 on an item. I always get complimented on my style, especially considering my age lol.

  • Andrea

I love this quote! You can’t be very creative if you can buy anything.

  • snugglepup

I used to like Zooey, after 500 days of summer came out, but not anymore. Nowadays I just feel like she always says the stupidest things. I love her hair tho, totally my hair idol.

  • claire

-__- Zooey’s parents are wealthy. I mean.. she went to Crossroads school for goodness sake.

    • Robin

Just because someone’s parents are rich, doesn’t mean they got a lot of pocket money as a kid. Perhaps her parents wanted her to grow up with the idea that you have to work hard before you get money, that’s not that weird.

      • anushka

i agree with Robin. Just because a parent is rich does not mean your rich. Rich parents does not necessarily equal to bad parenting.

        • snoops

I think she was talking about pocket money, but they way she worded it “growing up (I) didn’t have a lot of money” makes it sound like she grew up poor. I think if she did that on purpose it is very distasteful, but maybe it was an error of word choice. There is a difference between growing up without money (that means growing up without the security, education, food, opportunities, better healthcare, living in a safer/more affluent area, and all the other priviliges that money provides) and not getting your own credit card.

  • Candy M.

Barf. This is such an obvious ploy to be “relatable” as is the new trend among celebs. This women was fairly wealthy when growing up and spends 2000 dollars a month on clothes. Yeah right.

  • Liv

I have always believed that style can be more than one… My style is chic, classic, nerdy, and a feminine (not very girl as Zooey’s is but I do love polka dots and bows). But I can also rock a skin tight LBD and platforms… I think it can be a mixture, you just have to know when and where each part of your style personality is appropriate…

  • retrobanana

she has annoyed me since the ifrst movie i saw her in..

  • Howdy would you mind letting me know which webhost you’re working with? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely
