Demi Lovato: “Once I started feeling better about myself, I felt better about showing more skin”

demi-011916-_1 - Demi Lovato: "Once I started feeling better about myself, I felt better about showing more skin"

On how more confidence equals showing more skin:

I’ll have people who are like ‘Stop talking about it,’ but this summer I started wearing sexier stuff, and I got some hate for that, like, ‘You’ve changed.’ It’s like, ‘What’s wrong with being confident enough to wear this?’

I’ve never felt as confident in my skin as I do today. A year ago, on tour, almost every inch of my body was covered by clothing, and it was because I was hiding behind so many layers. Once I started feeling better about myself, I felt better about showing more skin. I have insecurities about my arms, so to wear a tank top on stage is extremely liberating for me, and uncomfortable sometimes. It’s also a statement, like, ‘Hey, watch out. You’re no longer getting the insecure Demi that you’ve been getting for the past couple of years. I mean business now.’

… says Demi.

Oh how I wish she’d just shut up.
It’s been the same blabla for years now.
Go back to singing, you’re good at that, but please stop with the “I’m confident so I have to be naked because look I am not skinny and so relatable” bs.

exactly. so “i mean business” means “i’m suuuuch a feminist that i adhere to classic ideas of ‘women are meant for sex and skin’, objectification for the sake of $$$” bltch please. disney brat who cannot sing or write music.

I quite agree somehow, but she can sing, really

haha meanwhile I’m bundled up in gloves, hat, scarf, puffy coat because it’s 12 degrees, and wind chill making it feel much colder, brrr
also she has very prominent collar bones for having a curvy, soft figure, I guess she is very pear shaped

Okay so I’m with everyone who will all definitely say they’ve had enough of her body confidence rant. BUT, That one part of her quote where she talks about wearing tank tops after having been insecure about her arms for so long, resonated with me. I’ve been insecure about my skinny legs my entire life. I’ve always found a pair of curvy shapely muscular legs to be sexy and I just don’t have them. They’re not shapeless but my knees are quite boney and I’m naturally skinny all over. I stuck to pants and knee length dresses until about 3-4… Read more »

I like this perspective. It makes her quote make more sense, and I think you’re right about where she is in her journey.

Ahh I have been there! My legs are opposite of yours. My calves and ankles are kinda big compared to my thighs I used to avoid wearing skirts and shorts. My number one beauty criteria was skinny ankles. Then I challenged myself and started wearing shorts, mini skirts and such. I was really self conscious in the beginning. When I realized people didn’t give a rat’s arse that was when I felt relieved and great. Now I see it was me all the way nothing is wrong with my legs
and have no toruble wearing anything revealing my legs.

I don’t understand how her collar bones are all stabbing through the skin, yet she has such a shapeless dumpy body.

Mine are the same way, and im not thin(thinner than her though). Its all about built

lia
Guest

not a fan of her body, but it’s hardly what I’d call ‘shapeless’. she is noticably pear shaped with a small waist to hip ratio with thicker muscular legs. that’s why her collarbones stick out, her torso is small

chris

Yeah, she does have a waist and a shape. she just has really thick arms. especially for a pear, who usually have slimmer arms. most women do not want big arms. some like bigger hips, thighs, bum. I don’t know anybody who says, I wish my arms had more chub on them though.

lia
Guest

yep, if she wanted thinner arms, legs, she would need to be close to underweight bc of the way her body stores fat in those areas and not in her torso. maybe this influenced her disorder.

I will say she’s got no cellulite, good for her.

I actually do wish my arms had more chub on them (not as big as Demi’s but bigger than I got), since I can’t control that tho I’m working on building more muscle there for a stronger look.

She has little to no muscle tone in her legs and blatantly visible cellulite. Call them thick all you want but muscular not remotely.

lia

I bet she’s got muscular legs, of course she’s chubby so you can’t see definition the same way you would in a lean fitness model. no muscle tone in legs makes me think of behati prinsloo or kate upton, with shapeless legs.

Mel

Also, her legs appear really solid and I don’t think they would look that way without some underlying muscle tone.

a
Guest

yeah exactly, there is muscle there covered with some fat which is why the “tone” (ie muscle) is not visible

Kia
Guest

She has muscles in the legs, you can see it with the shape and when she moves. She also has fat on it.
Check some not skinny athletes to see if u have the same no-muscles impression.

Kia

I agree. I think she is am hourglass. Evem if she diesnt have huge breasts. Her breasts are so high anyway,i know its strangevto say but they are, they are like above her shoulders XD

chris

Its because all her fat is on her arms and legs. she has a strange body, a pear with big arms. Her torso is fairly slim, except her arms

While i think shes annoying, i ferl the same way. I think a lot of us become more secure with age regardless of our looks. I had an amazing body in highschool(constantly worked out and ate only healthy) and while i knew i was “hot” i wasnt nearly as secure with my bod as i am now. Even though 17 year ol. Me wpuld not have appreciated the “averageness’ that is me now, i feel insanely sexy nd secure in myself

I think she looks amazing. Cute face. But she really doesn’t have any style sense at all.

And I know a lot of people get bored with the comments about her body etc. But for someone who has dealt (is dealing…) with some similar problems (self harm and eating disorder), it’s actually nice to read and see her recover.

tee

I agree! When recovering from an eating disorder (or similar issues)a lot of people will seek out stories from people like her and the more they talk about it the better and less alone we feel in our own journey.

She makes it sound like money and fame played no part in her scantily clad appearance, when we all know that the entertainment industry basically glorifies females who show a lot of skin. Women “empowerment” my a–.

Guest
I get it she may have worn out the whole I’m confident now talk but I still really like her. She has a very pretty face. Her body could use a little more muscle tone but she looks good and I don’t have a problem with her showing skin. Frankly she shows about as much skin as any other woman her age that you might see at a night club……..well maybe not the whole bodysuit/leotard thing but definitely short skirts that stop at the butt line. For the most part she only dresses like that on stage anyway which is… Read more »

It’s good to have confidence and I don’t have a problem with the amount of skin she shows, but she’s just really terrible at dressing her figure. Some of her outfits make her appear much shorter and stockier than she is, esp in the 2nd to last pic

I’m really tired of her. On a personal note, I’m kind of the opposite. If I’m feeling insecure, I’m more likely to show skin to get external validation whereas when I’m comfortable with myself, I’m perfectly content being my naturally modest self. Not in all situations maybe, but I feel like if you always feel the need to be “sexy” then you probably aren’t as confident as you think.

anna
Guest

Totally agree with this. Trying to be sexy does not = confidence to me, it’s actually the opposite I think… but then again there are lots of ppl who “cover up” their body when feeling insecure and I never experienced that. Ppl are different I guess.

lc

Blah blah blah. She just wants attention and record sales, that’s it. Confidence, my a-s.

Sometimes revealing more seems more insecure than confident.

Omg she needs to shut the hell up because no one cares. All she interviews is about body image. Gtfo. Go home, Demi.
