Erin Heatherton on Victoria’s Secret: “I was told I had to lose weight. I was really depressed”

Former Victoria’s Secret Angel Erin Heatherton recently gave her fans a lot of insight on what it is to be a famous lingerie model as she opened up about her past struggles with depression and body image, which were caused by the extremely high expectations she faced when she was a VS model:

‘My last two Victoria’s Secret shows, I was told I had to lose weight. I look back, like, “Really?” I was really depressed because I was working so hard and I felt like my body was resisting me. I got to a point where one night I got home from a workout and I remember staring at my food and thinking maybe I should just not eat. I realized I couldn’t go out into the world, parading my body and myself in front of all these women who look up to me and tell them that this is easy and simple and everyone can do this.’

… says Erin, who also mentions she used to work out twice every day in order to maintain her thin frame while working for VS.

  1. The VS models look too toned lately. They exercise like crazy before the shows and they don’t look soft or feminine.. bleh boring. Erin looks good but she’s just pretty, not really beautiful facewise.

  2. While it is true that most VS models look overly toned these days, Erin looks like a soft pear….a happy medium can be achieved I’m sure!

  3. looks so average. she looks like she binges, because she doesn’t just look like she gained weight but she looks bloated

      • lol, but more than just her stomach is bloated. her face and arms look quite puffy and formless, like she’s carrying a lot of water. Actually, a lot of people who starve themselves really can mess up their bodies and when they start eating normally their bodies hoard water- so she may still be going through that stage. I mean, she’s pretty much admitted she starved herself( as most of them though).

        • I dont’t see a “bloated stomach” and “puffy arms”. I think your conception of things is a little bit off. She looks like a slim, tall woman who is just not trained as ff—, which is – by the way – a relatively new trend. Some years ago nobody was that much into eating or not eating “beans” or women having to be “toned”.
In the 90ies everybody wanted the h—oin look that was made famous by Kate Moss. Nobody wants that now. Don’t get me wrong. Being fit is great. I love working out myself. But this current extreme which can be found in fashion and on Instagram is a trend that will fade least this is what I hope, because it is just another way of putting pressure on women and something that focusses women’s looks instead of valuing their worth as people.

          • yep, based on chris’ previous comments shes got a bit of a body fat obsession so any woman who isn’t 15% bf is “puffy” or “bloated”.. w/e. there is nothing unhealthy or unattractive about erin’s weight. time for all those fitness freaks to get over their ridiculous standards.(I’m actually really into fitness but not the way its trending right now, where its all about looks, like you said just putting more pressure on women).

          • I don’t think 15 percent or over is puffy, thats just where I am around- according to a test that could be wrong. A woman can be 25 percent fat and look good. Thats probably around what erin is, but she looks puffy.

          • Agreed, I have friends who literally all they can talk about is working out but it’s all about looks for them. It’s honestly hard to be around them, I feel like they’re bringing me down with them when I’m trying to undo years of conditioning as a girl and caring more about what I put into my brain.

  4. Several of the (better looking, not that it’s relevant) guys I know think she is super hot now that she’s gained weight back. Healthy is pretty.

  5. Wow, good for her for choosing to prioritize her health and sanity. And it is awesome that she’s opened up about this and is being honest about her experience. It sets a really good example for all the girls who look up to the VS models and sometimes develop EDs or obsessive behavior trying to look like them.

    • I agree– it sets a way better example! I wish they wouldn’t present the fantasy of just normal eating with diligent working out actually making them look the way they do in ads. It’s under eating, over exercise, a lot of Photoshop, and unhealthy pressure.

  6. I think it’s not a secret that Victoria’s secret pushes models to the extremes while spouting about healthy lifestyle etc.

  7. VS models lately are a bit too sinewy. Even the ones that are not super thin (Adriana Lima) wind up looking like a shriveled plant.

I don’t think her face is pretty, but I appreciate that she looked like she actually drank water.

  8. At least she is being open and honest about VS standards, lol.
Tired of VS putting out an image of, oh yeah! health/fitness! yeah! with all of the gym pictures and the promo of the fitness line.. when in reality, none of the models really have any muscle mass rather undereat to achieve skinny soft.
Erin is naturally girls next door type of cute. My favourite feature of hers would have been her freckles! I like how the old VS angels all had some sort of stand out feature to differentiate from one another. Like Miranda’s dimples, Erins freckles, Adriana’s eyes, etc. Now they all are so cookie cutter I don’t remember their names/hard to tell apart haha.

  9. Erin looks good now, normal. In fact, in some pics, like in the magenta top and black skirt, there doesn’t appear to be that much difference in her actual weight, just muscle tone. In other pics like the neon green dress you can see more change. But she wasn’t tiny then & isn’t fat now. Does she still model regularly? With all the body diversity in modeling these days, her changing figure may actually open some doors, though the 2 extremes (either fat or skinny) seem to sell better than “normal”.

  10. I heard she was a bigger girl (in high school) before she became a model. She lost a bunch of weight but couldn’t keep it off. She is not naturally stick thin so it was only a matter of time before the weight came back.

  11. Love her. When we walked for VS, I thought she had the best body out of all the models– healthy body fat percentage with muscle tone. VS seems to only want stick-thin models with no muscle tone these days, which is sad and not sexy at all IMHO if that’s not your natural shape (which for most people, including these models, it isn’t).
