Maggie Gyllenhaal: “You’re not sexy enough. You’re not pretty enough”

FFN_f_51731591 - Maggie Gyllenhaal: “You’re not sexy enough. You’re not pretty enough”

On being told she is “not being pretty enough”:

“When I was starting out, I used to hear “no” a lot and still do. And, “You’re not sexy enough. You’re not pretty enough.” When I was really young, I auditioned for this really bad movie with vampires. I wore a dress to the audition that I thought was really hot. Then I was told I wasn’t hot enough. My manager at the time said, “Would you go back and sex it up a little bit?” So I put on leather pants, a pink leopard skinny camisole and did the audition again and still didn’t get the part. After that, I was like, “OK, f— this!”

,,, says Maggie in The Hollywood Reporter.

  1. I think she is pretty and talented, but Hollywood is set up on always putting on the big screen the same prototyte of female (usually blonde, thin and with big breast)

  2. I’m not buying it, her parents are very well known in the film industry. If she can’t get roles with her parents’ influence and s—ting it up during casting calls to cover up her lack of talent, then maybe being an actress isn’t for her? The only noteworthy role she’s had was in Secretary. She’s the type of person I can’t stand; a woman born into a very wealthy family who thinks she’s a champion of women’s rights by complaining about beauty standards while fully participating in them.

    • Just because someone’s parents are in the film industry doesn’t mean they are just handed roles. Maggie went to an Ivey League school and then worked as a waitress for many years-I don’t think she felt entitled to anything. She’s also an incredible human rights activist AND she went to work on the Dark Knight only a few months after giving birth. If this woman champions anything it’s hard work and kicking a-s-s.
I find it really disturbing how people can sit behind their computers and declare their hatred for people they don’t even know. You’re not exempt from showing humanity just because you’re behind a screen.

      • The only thing I find disturbing here is your infantile reaction to a comment you disagreed with. If you think my comment expressed “hatred” and not “showing humanity” you really need to get out more. There was a swastika painted on my garage today (I’m Jewish), so I kind of have bigger things to worry about besides begging for forgiveness for being mean to Maggie Gyllenhaal.

    • STOP. Maggie and Jake are very talented actors. Like CRAZY talented, i’m a total movie fan and they are great character actors. I’m sure they know what hard work means, and just because their parents are successful screenwriter/director you can’t pigeonhole them. They are lucky people, don’t judge them.

    • I thought the same… She’s just not pretty enough, and I don’t want to sound mean but she’s not either like those people who are ugly but still very attractive and interesting, she’s just plain ugly.

      • Why does an actress have to be an exceptional beauty? That is so ridiculous! They are playing a part. Shouldn’t it be more about acting ability? She looks good enough to be an actress to me.

  3. …but she’s not exactly pretty or sexy. She’s cute and she needs to understand her niche and take advantage of it. I really can’t see her playing a stereotypical vampire for example, if a role calls for someone sexy hen that’s what they’re looking for. The most successful actors are the versatile ones and if she can’t do that maybe acting isn’t for her, especially combined with the fact that her parents helped get her foot in the door and she hasn’t exactly showed exceptional talent, at least not consistently.

  4. I haven’t watched any of her movies, but from pictures neither she nor her brother are beautiful. It’s wrong that it’s a bad thing for actors, though…
I think she looks great in the red dress. I wouldn’t like it on anyone else, but she looks cute and playful in it.

  5. That dress is incredible!! She’s so talented. I hate that hot and sexy are standards to meet. Shouldn’t be so important. She’s made an A list name for herself and it might be BECAUSE she’s not the super accessible hot/sexy. Go Maggie.

  6. She was quirky sexy in the film Secretary. I think it’s just her face that looks more cute than sexy. Nothing wrong with that, though.

  7. I have always found her beautiful, it surprises me to read that there are people who do not even find her pretty. She is truly gorgeous to me.

  8. I know it really sucks that people are so judged on something they don’t even choose. It is not like you decide what your body is going to look like when you are born. The only thing you have control of is your health and even that is somewhat controlled by genetics not that you can’t go against your genes. Appearance isn’t as important as people in hollywood think it is. I mean it doesn’t affect anyone’s life that much, like cure cancer or stop hunger.
