Mayim Bialik: “The norm has become a seamless, fat-free, streamlined body”

On Hollywood’s requirements to look perfect:

In my Blossom years, there was far less emphasis on perfection. The ideal body in the 80s and 90s was a Playboy bunny: skinny, with large fake breasts and no curves (except for the large fake breasts). Blonde was in, big lips and big puppy dog eyes were in and tons of lip gloss and mascara. No one wore SPANX or any such corset. Certainly not men! You wore clothes that flattered your body, but the idea that there should be no “bumps” to your physique did not exist.

Fast forward to this incarnation of my career. In the 21st century, both men and women routinely wear SPANX. Many actresses I know even wear SPANX when out and about running errands in jeans and a T-shirt. Many non-actresses I know have started to do the same. The norm has become a seamless, fat-free, streamlined body. Like we are made of plastic… like we are mannequins, really. That’s the look.

… says Big Bang Theory actress Mayim Bialik.

Men wear spanx? Lol. I’ve never heard of that one before

That’s crazy.. spanx are crazy… I know people live them but I hate them.. and panty hose. . When I got married I was getting fit for my skirt (I wore a white tee and tulle/lace skirt) I asked my seamstress if I should invest in spanx.. I was a 0-2 at the time… She gave me great advice… She did that if your fat spanx just smooth out your fat so either way fast or not it’s not worth how uncomfortable they are… And if you hate your photos no amount of spanx will make you feel better about… Read more »

I would rather die than wear spanx (exaggeration). From what I hear, they are the Worst Thing Ever, and feel like your clothes are *actually* trying to slowly murder you.
No thanks.
I love that you had a non conventional wrong gown, btw.

Aw thanks… I had to convince my mother it was a good decision. She loved it in the end… Very me…

She isn’t conventional pretty but I like her personalily and she is hilarious.
I don’t think she is fat.

She’s chubby but not fat… Just a little bigger than most women in Hollywood… I don’t mind chub… I think it can be cute… Weird but most guys I find attractive, like my husband, are a little chubby… Not it if shape or fat… Just a little pooch… So cute haha

Dont know who she is so my point of view on her physic isnt biased. Her face has proportions that i dont really like such as pointy chin, long distance between nose and lips the J-law no lid (means the lid gets on the lid so you cannot see anything but eyelash), long chin. The bad make up doesnt help and these kinda shoulders and neck looks not flatering. Weight wise, she could benefit from a 30 minutes training 3 times a week just to help her posture.

The playboy look is very unnatactive to me. Pamela Anderson, yuck,

Um, but honestly in the golden age of Hollywood women were expected to always look good and glamorous, it’s part of being a star. The 80s is when actresses started to reject that, and as a result there are almost no inter sting actresses left, no real stars. Maybe Angelina, but who else today can compare to the large number than life personas that stars of the past projected? Most starlets if this was the 60s would be considered plain and boring, and working at Walmart selling strollers.

Hmmm, funny enough I always saw Angelina as the epitome of a crowd pleaser. She was super dolled up to fit people’s beauty standards and changed a lot to achieve that. She kept her career going by being in the tabloids every day even though her movies sucked. Her humanitarian side is very smartly planned to be a people pleaser too. I can think of a handful of actresses that I don’t see like that, but Angelina is certainly not one of them.

I think that’s exactly the point Chrie was making actually. The “golden age” as they called it, was super glamourous. The stars (especially the women) were always well-put together and it was obvious that the very famous names were famous for a reason. They were not trying to appeal to the masses like a lot of the celebrities today do. They were supposed to be different, “special”. Nowadays, celebs win people’s adoration by being relateable and “just like us”, very few stars have the kind of hero worship of the past so Angelina is a great example actually. Her and… Read more »

You got it. She’s one of the few I can think of in the same ilk as Elizabeth Taylor or Monroe. If you saw her, you’d know she was a star and you’d remember it. If you saw I don’t know, Nina Dobrev you’d walk right past her. Being glamorous is a huge part of Hollywood, and part I think they would be better off keeping. Not every actress was glamorous, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, but they were still larger than life in their ways and projected strong images. Whereas the current crop of Hollywood celebs are all interchangeable, dull,… Read more »

Yes omg Bette! She was CAPTIVATING, such a phenomenal actress, and to think she was told she wouldn’t go far with a face like hers. These newbies will never hold a candle to her. I’m not a huge fan of Katherine’s movies, but she is a good actress. You can also tell she led a fascinating life. She was a star through and through

yep, pretty true! The worst part about spanx is they make you constipated, so you know none of those people can poop right!! And we all know how amazing pooping is. It’s a crime, really.

I really love Mayim. She’s very talented and she’s also well accomplished in other areas of her life. Iirc, I believe she studied and got a degree in neuroscience at UCLA. A woman that I think should be looked up to. No, she’s not conventionally attractive, but seriously who cares?

I don’t watch much TV (in fact I don’t even own a television–getting rid of it was one of the best decisions ever) and the TV I do doesn’t really fall into that category.

She sounds like a smart woman, not one of those bimbos whose every word is made up by the PR department.

she has a PhD in real life in Neuroscience from UCLA; she was accepted to Yale and Harvard, but stuck close to her family.

She did the whole blossom thing, but when she was college age, i guess she figured she could always come back, and didnt want to waste her brain on hollywood

Obviously everyone wants to be fit/toned, but id rather diet and work out than wear spanx all day…

liv

Even if I gained 300 lbs I’d still never wear spanx

CK

I agree. Also many celebs esp. the ones who’ve made it&are widely cast&offered jobs have a luxury of getting amazing money for few months of work, so they have plenty of free time and can workout anywhere (including in homemade gym) with best trainers if they need help or a sb. to push them&can afford to have healthy and delicious meals cooked for them (or try&experiment themselves)…at least it requires more effort than taking&posting million of silly&badly shopped or easily filtered selfies.

I love her. She tends to get extremely polarized reactions from people when she talks about beauty standards, but I love her. And she is so smart.
Also, Burn All the Spanx!
