Name: Siera Bearchell

Age: 23

Height: 1.74 m (5 ft 9 in)

Title: Miss Universe Canada 2016

Miss Canada Siera Bearchell has been under fire in the past weeks for gaining too much weight prior to her participation in the Miss Universe pageant. The beauty queen is currently being labeled ‘plus-size’ although she is just a size 6 at 5’9” – and here’s her message to her haters:

I was recently asked, “What happened to you? Why have you gained weight? You are losing points” This was a reference to my body of course. While I am first to say I am not as lean as I was when I was 16, 20, or even last year, but I am more confident, capable, wise, humble and passionate than ever before. 🙋🏻As soon as I started to love who I was rather than always trying to fit what I thought society wanted me to be, I gained a whole new side of life. This is the side I am trying to bring to the @missuniverse competition. The side of life that is so rare to find: self-worth and self-love. We always focus on the things we wish we could change rather than loving everything we are. #missuniverse #bodydiversity #IMG

With so much focus on the external, it's no wonder we suffer so much internally. 💭 I've seen the photo on the left circulating through media online (the changed image). The photo on the right is directly from the @missuniverse Press Website (the real, raw image). It's so sad that us women face this kind of criticism and hatred in a world that needs positivity now, more than ever. We need to uplift the women in our lives rather than belittle them for their appearance. We need to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness that we all exhibit. There is beauty beyond size. There is beauty beyond walking on stage in a bikini. There is beauty beyond looking a particular way. It's time to realize that true beauty, self-worth and validation start from within. #beautybeyondsize #bodydiversity #confidentlybeautiful #misscanada #missuniverse

  1. I never considered people who felt the need to show off their body (to the detriment of their other qualities) and contribute to a culture where women are reduced to their appearance as particularly confident, but that’s just me.

  2. I think she looks great, healthy and fit. She has really nice proportions, carries herself well, and I’m a sucker for her coloring (those eyesss). She has a little wider bone structure than most of those pageant contestants, so I think her weight is pretty close to ideal for her frame. Too bad she has to defend herself so much but it is good for young girls who watch these things to hear this message.

  3. I personally think her body is amazing and her eyes are gorgeous. I am also not really into beauty pageants, but it is nice to see some variety out there every now and then..sad when a normal, healthy looking body is considered “different” due to a ridiculous standard of beauty, but that’s the world we live in.

  4. She certainly doesn’t look like a size 6. Lying about your size throws away all of your credibility about being proud of your body.

    • Can we all just stop the obsession with size already. Different brands have different sizing. End of the day it really doesn’t matter, it’s just a sort-of-random number. note that this woman did not mention her size in any of her comments on this post – it was the author of the post who decided to make it about size – and it comes off as kind of catty and petty to bring it back to that when the point was about general appearance/health/beauty/body diversity. Let’s let go of those distractions, the number on the tag of the pants or the number on the scale, that have almost no meaning whatsoever, and focus on the things that actually matter, guys…stop wasting your time on the irrelevant sh*t

      • I agree with you. I checked out her instagrram and she did said that she is size 6. She is even selling her size 4 gown she wore in the pageant recently.

      • I agree the size on the tag of clothes changes and a 4 in one brand could be a 6 in another. However she is the one claiming to be a size 4-6 when she is closer to an 8-10. She obviously does care about her size as she wants to be 4-6 when she is not. There for I stand by my point, she is not proud of her size or body as she wouldn’t be trying to mislead people about being smaller than she is. It’s not my obsession about wanting to be smaller than I am.

    • I’m 5’7 and I look similar to her, and I can be a size 6 (EU 38 right?) on a good day/depending on the brand! And let’s not forget camera adds 5-10 pounds. No need to accuse her of lying

    • I can’t edit my comments, I can’t like comments to express agreement, I don’t get notifications if someone responded one of my comments… I don’t get why you would change it. Subscribed users won’t be as active this way.

      • Yep, I’ve been having trouble with my comments for a while now (I’m ancient so I don’t really care about my phone and mostly use my PC, so I thought maybe it was a layout change thing to cater to android/iphone users), so I was hoping this would go back to the way it was. But yeah, they gave up discus and I miss the upvote feature already!

  5. Us size 6 is not equal to sizes in Australia or europe or uk so we should check the size differences before we say anything.
And she looks stunnig .glad that there is someone like her .she must be quiet brave .
