Sofia Vergara: ‘I know who I am. I know how I look’

sofia-barneys-1 - Sofia Vergara: 'I know who I am. I know how I look'
A while ago, Sofia Vergara was telling us that dressing her boobylicious body shape is a challenge, as she is at risk of looking like a stripper. Today’s quotes are equally interesting:

I’m a natural blonde, but when I started acting, I would go to auditions, and they didn’t know where to put me because I was voluptuous and had the accent, but I had blonde hair. The moment I dyed my hair dark, it was, “Oh, she’s the hot Latin girl.’ I loved it “Being brunette toned me down a bit.”

For every 100 roles that come out for another actress, there are two that fit somebody like me. I mean, I cannot play a scientist. I know who I am. I know how I look. I know how I sound. I’m not going to tell my agent, Book me for Schindler’s List 2.

… says Sofia.

  1. I have a hard time picturing her as a natural blonde. But then, maybe for her, a light brown also means blonde, in my country you need to have a really light hair for it to be considered blonde. The acting, i appreciate her honesty, she’s not trying to act like she’s all that and more, but if she isn’t even trying to improve herself, she’s very one-dimensional. Basically with what she’s saying i get the picture that she’d always be playing some kind of version of herself. I do adore her in Modern Family.

  2. It depends on where you come from how fair haired you need to be to be called blonde. I have medium brown hair with (natural) blonde highlights and some people would call me blonde – especially those from India, etc. But I wouldn’t really call myself blonde as when I think blonde I think of the bombshells from the 50’s! I can’t really imagine Sofia being a very fair blonde – she is probably a dark blonde naturally.

As for the ‘Schindler’s List 2’ comment – she really isn’t doing herself any favours with that one! Still, there are plenty of gorgeous actresses who can act and play serious roles – so I don’t think she should rule herself out just based on looks! Her accent would play a role in casting, of course, but look at Salma Hayek! Beautiful curvy latina who is sexy but can still play serious roles. I think she’s stereotyping herself too much.

  3. Hats of to her for seizing the opportunity. Isn’t that what living and working in this great country is about.

She is a stunning sexy Latina that 99% of men would love to get their hands on. She is the reason I watch Modern Family.

@ Maria, she was just being facetious by referring to Schindler’s List 2.

    • thank you! someone else got it! (it made me giggle to be quite honest – just the idea of it is so out there!) anyhow the point is she’s not going to go after other steretypical ethnicities and be able to play them believably.

  4. exactly! and she not only says: how I look, but also who I’m, and she’s not the scientist kind, it’s out of her comfort zone, just what I think, great girl

  5. I dont think she was a “blonde” and I dont think she is a “brunette” now. She was a light brown/dark blonde and now a darker brown. Ok may be I am being to picky now hehe

    • Exactly the point I was going to make. Even if that were somehow true in real life, an on-screen scientist would still probably be a sexy, bosomed, latina woman. Actressess of any role are usually attractive, and not plain.

I think her going for a specific role has less to do with how she looks and more to do with her comfort zone and talent. Maybe she’s just more comfortable and better at doing the roles she usually does, and wouldn’t be able to pull off a serious, Schindler’s list role. But like I said, that’s not because of how she looks.

  6. Don’t get too serious now, she was just joking. I dig her
*I’m not going to tell my agent, ‘Book me for Schindler’s List 2.’ * that’s just hilarious

  7. She makes it sounds like her sexy looks are the reason why she isn’t doing serious roles – how silly – aren’t almost all the actresses in hollywood sexy? Look at Scarlett Johansson, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry,Angelina Jolie, to name but a few! And sorry but these women are much, much more sexy than sofia, so her comment just sounds….ridiculous. Looks have nothing to do with why she is not doing great movies instead of a comedy show, beautiful and sexy women are very much the norm in hollywood casting – she’s made it sound like she is sooooo sexy that she cant even be put in the same roles as the rest of the women in hollywood. Her attitude really turns me off.

  8. I actually think her comments make a lot of sense. Yes, someone like Salma Hayek broke out of the mould, but she herself said she was typecast as the ‘sexy Latina’ all the time at the beginning of her career. Once you are typecast it is tough to be chosen for a different role. It’s just the same as how East Asian men are either dorks or martial arts masters. Even if you are successful in your home country and have played a variety of roles, you WILL get typecast for your looks and accent on trying to break into Hollywood. Just look at Tony Leung… very talented actor. He tried to come to Hollywood and all he could get were kung fu roles. Not saying Sofia is a huge talent waiting to be ‘discovered’ by being put in another role, but I am saying she has a point.

    • I completely agree with you, Ella! Thank you! I’m glad someone gets it! I mentioned that in my comment lower down on the page. The entertainment industry is vain and shallow at its core. There are exceptions: unattractive and/or truly talented actresses that aren’t that sexy that make a pass, most recently Gabourey Sidibe, but rarely does a story like hers come to fruition. That is the industry. why is everyone acting like they don’t get it?! I completely understand what Sofia is saying, the hands behind the decisions in Hollywood are not necesarily impressed with how talented an actress is, but how pretty she is… It takes a lot of long hard work to make your dreams come true in that town. Actresses are trained, but their beauty helps get them in the door. Although talent is clearly a must, that is not the first thing they see when they cast you, that’s a major part of the reason, casting directors want your picture AND your measurements before they make their decision. I believe she’ll eventually make it into roles more serious if she wants to, but until then, she’s telling it how she sees it.

    • same with ashely simpson, huh?
why do people find it so hard to believe that she had blonde hair and dyed it? blonde hair isnt everyone’s ideal!

          • for God’s sake! there isn’t one and only kind of blonde, there are a lot, caramel blonde, honey blonde, platinum blonde, bronde, dark blonde, highlights… you don’t have to be platinum blonde to be blonde, that is just one type of blonde.
I’m Spaniard and to me this is blonde
maybe in Finland or Sweden it’s dark brown but for a latina, in Colombia this is very light, blonde.

About her comments I totally understand what she means, she has a very strong accent and a very curvy body, it’s very difficult to her to get a non sexy latina role, it was difficult for salma hayek too, and it’s difficult to any latina becuase they only see them as a bombshell.
When I had my hair blonde and I travel to any other country people were surprised I was spanish because, even thought I have a curvy pear shape body, they didn’t have in mind a blonde spanish which is stupid because there are hair tints everywhere, but people only have in mind, spanish girls=brunette. Stereotypes, they exists.

  9. She makes sense and she understands the business she’s in. You’ve got to know what types of roles you’re probable and improbable to play due to your image.

  10. ugh… there are plenty of sexy, talented actresses out there (far sexier than her, in my opinion) that take serious roles, and don’t rely on their chest for their paycheck.
And since when do latina women get to fall under the “extra sexy” category? Sexy women are sexy– no matter if they are French, American, Swedish, or Columbian.
Also, her bikini pictures are NOT flattering. Yikes. Much better in clothes.

  11. Wow. This is absurd. Here’s a woman who basically celebrates the fact that other people are responsible for determining her value as an actress as… latina? And the most riveting issue here is whether she really has blonde or light brown hair? Yay for women….

    • not everyone wants to be an actress for artistic purposes. some don’t mind the shallow existence that comes with fame. if it puts money in her pockets that may be all she’s thinking about. if she wanted to do more she probably could and would… or at least try. as far as other people determining the value of an actress… welcome to being a woman in the entertainment industry, just because she’s the only one to SAY something like that, doesn’t mean she’s the only living with that evil truth. Julia, Halle, and even Meryl had to work through it.

  12. She’s a dork…there were a LOT of hot females in sci-fi movies laying doctors and PhDs…maybe she’s not talented enough to get out of her stereotype.

  14. The particular electronic cigarette ego basic starter kit is fantastic for new
users. Remove other nearby wireless devices, such as a cordless or
cellular telephone and make sure the mouse is at least eight inches away
from a wireless keyboard. Mobile computing is continuously getting better
with best performance, smarter processors, light weight and handy designs,
but as we all know, the main power of the mobile computing device (weather it is laptop, mobile,
PDA or e-book reader) resides in it’s battery capacity.

  15. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours
would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m
not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
