In the Spotlight: Extremely Skinny Vlogger Eugenia Cooney

extremely-skinny-4 - In the Spotlight: Extremely Skinny Vlogger Eugenia Cooney

WARNING: Triggering images ahead.

At high request, here is a story that involves vlogger Eugenia Cooney, an extremely skinny 22 year-old with more than 890 000 followers on YouTube. In the recent weeks, thousands of people have joined forces and signed a petition to remove Eugenia from YouTube, in order to avoid influencing young girls who look up to her when it comes to body image. Not only did Eugenia’s extremely skinny appearance led to a petition, but the vlogger also gets an overwhelming amount of concerned comments on her videos. However, Eugenia insists that she does not have an eating disorder and that she is ‘naturally thin’ – also, she does not agree that she can negatively impact her viewers.

Eugenia’s reply to the criticism she’s been receiving over her extremely skinny appearance:

‘I’m just kind of naturally like that, I guess. There isn’t really a reason. I have never told anyone to try to like lose weight or to try to like change the way they look or to look like me. Some people are saying I’m like a bad influence on girls. I just want you guys to know like I have seriously never have tried to be a bad influence on YouTube or to influence anyone badly. I would never want to do that.’

More details on this story from Daily Mail:

More than 18,000 people signed a Change.org petition calling for her to be temporarily banned from YouTube and seek medical help.

‘Eugenia Cooney has a serious medical condition and needs to seek help. She has been influencing her viewers by her serious underweight condition,’ it said. ‘She may not be intentionally influencing her viewers but showing 50 per cent of her body in videos and pictures are not helping girls with anorexia or any eating disorder,’ said administrator Lynn Cloud.

Among those to have signed the petition is one person who claimed their cousin starved herself to look more like the vlogger. ‘My little cousin lost 17lbs because she wanted to look like Eugenia. She is now receiving care. She is only 12-years-old.’

Woke up like an hour ago good morning guys 😸 how are you doing today? 💕

Anyone who looks at this poor kid and thinks she looks good is already on the way to serious mental illness and they’re just going to find inspiration on one of the bajillion thinspo pages out there anyhow. She’s not promoting anorexia so, yeah, leave her be.

Kia

She’s not a poor kid! She acts like one but she knows what she does perfectly well, even if anorexic. She might be confused, but it’s a bias to think of anorexics as babies because they look little. They are people and they are pursuing this with gratification because they don’t know better. They are not saints even. I knew every kind of anorexic person. They often trade thinnes for pity and care from others.

Maybe “kid” is the wrong word, but she’s quite a few years younger than me so that’s what I meant. Also the emo hair and silly makeup is like something a 14y/o would do even though i think she’s like 21 or 22.
I still feel sorry for her though.

Hope she seeks help. I think that because of her position and young fanbase, she’s not a good influence and her medium is not a good influence for her. I don’t think they should ban her. But if she isn’t ready to come out about her problem, she should at least stop saying that her thinness is just an opinion some people have about her. Making it seem like she isn’t underweight does have a huge PRO ED tone.

Kia

Please,go ahead..make her more famous. She earns some good thousands of dollars from being skeletonish, a very good extra push. Me,I hate her for being stupid (I can say this right, not body-shaming?). everybody has the right to feel beautiful themselves, but you can’t sell a false image to people willing to be like you. basically,do what you want but don’t lie to your “costumers” and don’t pretend you are an example of health. Like…when I was super fat, I was super fat (due to serious ED), I knew it,I didn’t like it at all, I tried to get better but most… Read more »

I think it’s because ED is like an addiction, I don’t think she can stop on her own, being in control of her weight and the fame that comes with it is like a drug. She doesn’t care about the girls watching her because she doesn’t even care about herself. No one with confidence feels the need to starve themselves to death to get famous/feel better in their skin. It takes a real strong person to get over that selfloathing, bad eating habits and need for attention/fame. I don’t understand why her mom even participates in her videos sometimes… Wtf… Read more »

While I do agree with a lot of things you say, the truth is that anorexics get “strenght” from losing more and more, since we know it’s mostly about control. What I mean is when you were fat you felt bad about it (judging from your comment). You weren’t proud, you didn’t want it advertised. It’s a different story. Fat people don’t usually try to “outfat” eachother and that is a major difference. I’ve been to pro ana forums were they encouraged each other, and even competed, with their no food or low food days etc. You probably know this… Read more »

The thing is her only “quality” is being anorexic, and she doesn’t say it. It’s like an obese person eating on camera and pretending being that fat actually feels great and it’s awsome and also perfectly normal. should be banned? Yes.

Mmhh I thought being obese is only attribution Tess offers as she is a model, her body is her money-maker.Isn’t it practically the same s—?

Kia

Yes.

Agatha

I’m not sure if the gravity of this “bad example” is equiparable to unhealthy fat models because of the nature of both problems, being obese is not the ultimate aesthetic goal of most fat people, but being this underweight IS one of the aspirations of some anorexics.

Kia

Indeed, in most cases, anorexia is ego-sintonic and bulimia/binge is ego-distonic. look on wiki for meaning.

However over eating is the goal of many overweight people. The trigger to many overweight people is just seeing food.

But in response to others or the petition, does that mean we should ban eating on YouTube or food from YouTube? Realistically, I’m sure unhealthy food receipts on YouTube has added a lot more pounds on people who didn’t need extra pounds, than pounds were lost on people because of this girl’s YouTube videos where she just talks about stuff unrelated to weight loss. What a double standard.

yeah, censorship is not the way to go for these issues imo – if she is banned by a petition then that sets a precedence for anyone starting a petition to ban anything they don’t like and having it work if there are enough signatures… really goes against freedom of speech etc. If someone wants to do something about pro-ana stuff on the internet, there are much more blatantly ED-promoting things they could target out there than this girl. sure, she may be exacerbating problems for some girls by making it seem normal/ok to be this weight, but at the… Read more »

I don’t know if it is You Tubes place to intervene. Where are this girl’s parents & friends? And those of her fans that want to look like her? Because a kid who wants to look like her body-wise already has serious body image issues.

She’s terrifying to look at. However, she should in no way be silenced for what she looks like. I almost want to believe she has some other sort of medical condition like maybe something involving muscle, because she has been SO thin for so long that I feel like she would have been hospitalized or died at this point. But if that was the case, then I think she probably would have come out and said it at this point, leaving us with the only logical assumption left. Also, I’ve seen a few of her videos here and there. She… Read more »

Kia

Yeah, it plays a role. This happens not depending on how fat is your mom,but on how much is the lack of healthy boundaries. If there is a twisted co-dependency, under plenty of smiles and unmet emotional needs, the daughter can feel almost “eaten” by her mom and longing for her true attention at the same time. A component where the “emotionally abused” daughter wants to affirm herself as her own body by morphing into her mom’s opposite is not always the key,but a possible scenario. It is somehow healthy as a concept, but ending in disease it becomes another… Read more »

Yeah, but who looks at Tess Holiday who’s not already obese and says– I’m gonna go eat 50 cheeseburgers everyday now? Both are bad, but Anorexia is a different story from that. This woman could drop dead tomorrow, next week tbh. its not skinny shaming at all. she’s a very sweet girl it seems, a lot of people just want to see her ok. It’s actually more of concern for her. For Tess, she has a rude obnoxious personality and is extremely unlikable. I could actually care less about what she does to herself. Eugenia seems very nice and vulnerable… Read more »

Unfortunately it’s probably more likely that Tess Holiday will drop dead tomorrow than this girl. It’s very likely this girl will get over her eating disorder as she gets older, but generally women Tess Holiday’s size never get over their eating disorders. Most obese women (there certainly are exceptions) never get over their eating disorders and die from all of the usual ailments associated with being obese. Most anorexics recover and are fine (unless they developed another eating disorder and become obese). Yes people die from anorexia, but it is unusual. Almost everyone who is obese dies from an ailment… Read more »

The statistic is anorexia has a 4% mortality rate, and if you considered only people who reach Eugenia’s size, it would be much much higher. It is actually not as unlikely as people think. Once you reach this point it is extremely unlikely you will get better without hospitalization/rehab/extreme intervention. You are right about obesity though. I think its hard to compare mortality rates because the one for anorexia only counts direct cause and doesn’t consider health problems that accumulate and occur when you are older, which is basically what people dying of obesity is.

jjj2

While 4% is certainly not a good mortality rate, 1 in 4 deaths in America are caused by Heart Disease according to the CDC. That accounts for 610000 deaths a year. Heath Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. 1 in 3 adults in the United States are classified as being obese. Obesity is linked to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, all of which is considered preventable deaths according to the CDC. The point of this article is that people want to remove this poor girl from the internet who… Read more »

The low mortality rate is because much fewer people become anorexic (many more bulimic or other eds) than how many are obese. It is not low at her weight, if she gets whatever little illness. Mostly is not even death the treath, but how she is mental. she has a psychiatric issue. She has an ed, not “may”. lol. She is promoting it as well. All her channel is a window to show off her anorexia,is not like she speaks about anything..It’s basically an alibi to show her body which boost her disease and provides a false depiction of what… Read more »

She doesn’t sound clueless to me…

Look, I don’t know what your deal is here, but most of your comments come across almost as very condescending and demonizing of those who have eating disorders. She is still a person. She’s not JUST a girl with severe anorexia, nor is anorexia her “personality”. It’s sad and she’s clearly very sick, but she’s not a monster.

Kat

Kia didn’t say Eugenia is a monster. And when you have severe anorexia, it does take over your life. You literally cannot go a single second without experiencing the severe psychological or physical symptoms that go along with starving yourself (for more about this, you could read about the minnesota starvation experiment). This may not be politically correct, but in a sense, you really do become the disorder. This doesn’t make Eugenia less of a person–everyone deserves to be treated with compassion and kindness regardless of their psychological or physical state–but she does have a serious mental illness, and I… Read more »

Kia might not have called her a monster exactly, but she’s said plenty of negative things about her that it’s safe to say she thinks she’s a bad person.

And thanks, but I’m well aware of how a severe eating disorder affects an individual given that I have one. Yes, eating disorders impact somebody on every level, but that doesn’t mean they are only their eating disorder.

Thank you, that’s the point. Staying at that weight takes a lot of daily effort and the obsession is CRA-ZY. First of all, you don’t sleep. You are consumed by cravings or fear and by obsessive loops 24/7 (like…will I gain weight from the smell of bread. that exact biscuit I saw. Every cm of my skin). You are dumb. There is no space for a person. I guess you have to have some experience of a debilitating ed to get it. IT’S a complete insanity and you don’t know there could be something else from you. just really…I am it… Read more »

You’re right, if you follow her twitter she is always complaining that she cant sleep. She show’s all the signs. She complains she gets sick all the time, that she’s cold etc.

She clearly is more than anorexia, if only she knew! its clear that her identity lies in anorexia itself. I don’t consider her a monster and I have no deal, I just find her in her videos embarrassing and annoying, kept her looks aside, and I do hate her choice of selfishly tell a lie about her ed..as much as I hate whatever “statement” from tess holiday.
I am probably considering eugenia mote like a person than many others. And no,the pitiful narrative of a fragile kitten in need does not describe anorexia.

I agree with you that she should not be removed from the internet and that it would be illogical to remove her for being a bad influence, but not remove e.g. Tess Holiday. What I meant to say was just that I think the risk of death due to anorexia like Eugenia has is worse than it seems – for e.g. there are people classified as having anorexia who still look at a healthy weight, and have it maybe a few years and then recover, and obvs they are at a much lower risk of death than someone who looks… Read more »

“The brains of those with and recovered from anorexia have subtle but impactful differences from those who have never struggled with the disorder. The brains of people with anorexia have a different reward response, react differently to feedback, and have altered serotonin pathways.” basically being in treatment from an ED myself i learned that when your body is in this starvation mode your brain doesn’t function properly, which explains why ppl with the disorder can often see themselves completely differently than what they actually look like. I’m so sorry for this girl, i really hope she gets help. The problem… Read more »

This is so weird. Some of the pics look photoshopped, like the one with the red jeans. Look at her legs. Some also look faded in the…er…”crotch” area. I don’t know what to think. If this is indeed how she looks then there’s no way anyone is naturally this thin. I think I’ve been brainswashed to a certain degree because I sometimes find myself wishing I looked like people who are clearly underweight. But this… I don’t think anyone who isn’t very mentally ill would find this body attractive. It’s actually disturbing and I don’t really know what else to… Read more »

Yes, but even in pictures, to me she just looks really sick… there’s nothing enviable or beautiful about this at all and its uncomfortable to look at, like I’m staring at a terminally ill person. So even if someone envies how she looks in pictures, isn’t that a sign that their mind is terribly warped? Even if they don’t know about the health consequences that come with this?

Kia

No, it all comes with exposition. The more often you see an image the more you like it(or less dislike it). Thats a big fundamental of dvertisment. Is also what makes society idolise certain beauty standards rather than others, far ore then supposed “biologic reasons”. Especially from a glamorised context where an image (or y type) is portraied as perfectly fine,normal,functional-which is not- and presented in this case as an apparently smiley fashionable woman who shows off a ot of different outfits. To begin with, I am attracted (not sexually of course, but as an identity challenge) by such an extreme stylisation… Read more »

This is seriously disturbing and horrifying ! The fact that she’s not lying on a hospital bed right now is very surprising to say the least.
I’m not blaming her, she’s obviously sick and in denial, but shame on the Youtube executives who haven’t shut her channel down yet. They know she will lead very young impressionable girls to anorexia and they will be partly responsible for it.

Her mother is overweight. Eugenia moved from her mother’s house a few months ago and lost more weight now that she lives alone. It’s belive that while she was with her mother she ate more. Now that she’s alone probably eats less. That’s why this petition started because she moved and lost weight.

In a sense, it becomes ones indentity and many who have an eating disorder do not know who they would be if they were to gain and get back to a socially acceptable or healthy weight god forbid. Would people still praise them? Would they still get the attention? Not that those who suffer from eating disorders are attention seeking per say, but they do not have love for themselves and in a sense, it seems as though the concern of others is at least some form of love or some type of something. It can be tricky, because you… Read more »

that second pic is horrifying, she looks like she has one foot in the grave– lifeless. I think its also worth mentioning she was super skinny last year, but she’s lost even more weight the past few months. you dont think people have lashed out at tess for promoting her fatness and lying saying she’s healthy? is this your first day on the internet?
Both women are extremes and frightening, and neither deserve a platform, and both need help. Banning either isnt the solution, rather not giving them exposure is probably the right way around it. If you have a kid and they idolize this person, maybe you need to sit down with your kid and deal with their feelings and the roots

If you think being lashed out at is equal to being signed for a ban from yt go get your brain checked. She is def sick and she needs help immediately but banning her from yt?Woah! What is next, forbidding severely obese or anorexic people to go out of their homes in order to avoid a likely influence on young people? Is it how modern society deals with problems? It doesn’t help her in the slightest.
