On how gaining 30 pounds for a movie role last year made her sick:

It was brutal in every sense. This time around, I really felt it in my health. The sugar put me in a massive depression. I was sick. I couldn’t lose the weight. I called my doctor and I said, ‘I think I’m dying!’ And he’s like, ‘No, you’re 41. Calm down.

… says Charlize in Variety.

I like her alot… And while it can be harder to lose weight once you get older all she’d have to do it mild exercise and a mainly plant based diet

I feel so sorry for her, she probably only made millions for this.

Really think she is overrated as an actress.

Not every actresses (not to mention Charlize is an A lister, Academy Award winner) would accept the challenge to change their weight for a movie, in my opinion she’s courageous to have done it twice, Monster and for this more recent movie. It proves that she’s not just a superficial woman and she values a good role more than her appearance and whether or not she could get it back after she’s done shooting.

Not relevant to my point at all. I was talking about her acting skills not her willingness or courage to alter her body for a role. That’s an entirely different issue. Actually going to such extremes seems a surefire way to being noticed and getting nominations. One of my all time favourite movies is “Remains of the Day” – if you watch the tensions SUBTLY played between Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins in their roles without undergoing any major physical transformation. Brilliant acting in my view. It is on this basis that I don’t think that Charlize is that great… Read more »

As someone who’s been through hellish mental episodes, this sounds so frightening to me. I think sometimes it’s nice to be so strongly dedicated to something that can evoke a lot of emotions in an audience (ie acting) but when you’re jeopardizing your health and sanity, you have to question whether you really think it’s worth it. Idk. Depression is just so huge, so for me, I’d probably never do it.

I think she is just stunning!!! What a gorgeous actress. This must have been really hard for her to do, I commend her for opening up about it.

Of course she was paid well for this, but that’s not the point, she could have made the same money probably with other more comfortable roles. I believe she encountered these mental struggles, and I think it was pretty brave of her to do it in the first place. Especially as an actress whom a lot of people know for her iconic beauty and looks. It takes guts and self-love
