Oprah Talks Body Image

oprah-talks-body-image - Oprah Talks Body Image

In a recent interview, Oprah (who recently said that she reached 200 lbs) opened up (again) about her weight – here’s what she had to say:

It’s not about the food.  It’s about using food – abusing food. Too much work. Not enough play. Not enough time to come down. Not enough time to really relax.  I am hungry for balance. I’m hungry to do something other than work.

I’ve been hiding my body because I didn’t want you to see it.  Here I am, one of the most visible people in the world, trying not to be seen on the cover of my own magazine.

This is the year of hopefulness.  My goal is to be the weight that my body can hold and be healthy and strong and fit and be itself. One of the things I had to learn to do is to embrace this body that I have and be grateful for what this body has given me.  God blessed me and this body. I mean, I could weep right now thinking about the love and appreciation I have for this body. For that, I am truly grateful.

I read her article in her magazine about her weight gain and felt that was VERY courageous of her to be so honest. Good for Oprah!

Amen Oprah! Once you've had true balance in self; nuturing and nourishing your body will come naturally. I understand her struggle…being in shape is work for me. Sometimes you forget that you are not one of 'them'. You can't eat anything you want. You can't be lazy. You don't lose weight when your depressed…you eat. lol Good for her, and good luck on her quest for balance.

She is an emotional eater and I feel for her – no matter how much money she makes it cannot kill that instinct – 'or unhealthy relationship with food' as some psychoanalysts might say – that she has and many many people have.

Oprah’s struggle with body image is something that many can relate to. Recently, we interviewed Kirsten Haglund, Miss America on our eating disorder blog. She spoke candidly about the pressures to be thin and how she handles them. If you would like to learn more feel free to check it out: http://eatingdisorder.org/blog/2009/01/14/q-a-wit
