Gigi Hadid: “The world puts so much pressure on fashion, then judges models for succumbing to that pressure”

Back in 2015, Gigi Hadid walked the Tommy Hilfiger in a bikini and she immediately received a lot of criticism for not looking skinny enough. Gigi then wrote a lengthy post in which she shared that she was comfortable with her figure and that she would never change it – her words in 2015 (read it all here):

Yes, I have boobs. I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I’m not asking for special treatment. I’m fitting into sample sizes. Your mean comments don’t make me want to change my body, they don’t make me want to say no to the designers that ask me to be in their shows, and they definitely don’t change the designers opinions of me.

This week, Gigi, who previously said that she lost weight due to a thyroid medical condition, recalled the feedback she got in 2015 for her message, saying:

‘The response was crazy. From Victoria’s Secret Angels to my friends who are considered plus size, everyone texted me and said they appreciated me saying something. The world puts so much pressure on fashion, then judges models for succumbing to that pressure.’

  1. She looks great now, IMO. At the VS show this year she was a little thin, but in the yellow bikini she looks fantastic and perfectly healthy. Her abs and face are def. her best features.

  2. My mother had thyroid disease. My aunt had it, as well as my sister, cousin, and best friend. Im not a doctor, but in every case of developing thyroid disease (all of their cases were hypothyroid) all patients listed above gained considerable amounts of weight. Randomly developing a hyperthyroid, where weight loss is a side effect, is pretty uncommon. Iodine ingestion could help you develop a hyperthyroid, but the most common being Graves disease, or a nodule on your thyroid that overproduces hormones. Side effects would be hair loss, thinned hair, blurred vision, side effects in conjunction to anxiety (sweatiness, shakes, etc).

So, I find it hard to believe Gigi and other models’ claims of weight loss. I’d much rather her admit that she’s in an industry which demands a thinner figure, and thats why she lost weight. Moreover, I think she looks good either way.

    • SooOoOo,
of course you are right that most people with hypothyroidism become rather overweight when developing the disease. Thyroid hormone is very essential to keep our metabolism running.
The first phase of Hashimoto (hypothyroiditis) is hyperthyroidism as the thyroid is destroyed and all hormones leak out. Once you receive Euthyrox as a treatment for your Hashimoto, it is very easy to take more and lose weight.
Unfortunately many female doctors do this in order to stay thin. I can imagine that models use it, too. Damages your metabolism and is quite dangerous.
Since Gigi is a young and fertile female, she fits into the risk group of having autoimmune thyroid disease.

  3. Get another job then? It’s not like she’s from an impoverished former Soviet bloc country where her family would starve if she didn’t take any job that came her way. I’m not saying no one can ever complain about their job, but if you go into a superficial industry don’t be surprised that not everyone is going to find your body perfect.

  4. Here, I found the translation for you:

“Every model licked my boots, even the plus size *__* It’s like, fashion puts so much pressure on networking and followers that they didn’t even care about my low weight, its impact and my hypocrisy!”

  5. I wanted to say how she seems like an ok person, and im not saying she is not, but than i think – having such a wealthy life and all the possibilities to do whatever they want, study whatever they want – she and her sister choose to stuck with modeling -.-

    • Yeah the only message I’ve gotten from the media is women are never good enough and there’s nothing we can do about it. You’re always too muscular, soft, thin, fat, top heavy, bottom heavy, confident, insecure, etc.

  6. I’m just tired of seeing the Hadid’s. There are way better more interesting models out there. Not trying to offend any fans. Just saying….

  7. So is she admitting she lied about her thyroid being the culprit? I used to have a friend that lied about a thyroid to disease to cover up an eating disorder, while bashing me for being open about my ED…something about denial and shame maybe?

  8. She only looks good in the new photos because they made her look softer and less ill with Photoshop, no comparison to recent candid shots.

  9. I think she’s a pretty girl but she’s also a liar. She lost weight because of a diet not for the Hashimoto disease. I have it and also my family and it’s completely false that it makes you to drop weights. I take Eutirox but my weight is the same, maybe I’ve lost 5 lbs tops but surely you don’t lose 15 lbs or much like Gigi. I was 115/116 lbs before and I’m 112 now. Most people with Hasimoto gain weight. The minimum weight loss is only a short phase at the beginning of treatment but Gigi said she has been taken Eutirox for 2 years now so it’s untrue.

    Ps. Sorry for my English
