Size 10 Model Myla Dalbesio for Calvin Klein

27 year-old model Myla Dalbesio has made history by being the first size 10 US model to score a Calvin Klein campaign. Many more details from Daily Mail:

‘It’s kind of confusing because I’m a bigger girl,’ Myla, who stands at 5ft 11in, told Elle. ‘I’m not the biggest girl on the market but I’m definitely bigger than all the girls [Calvin Klein] has ever worked with, so that is really intimidating. I’m not skinny enough to be with the skinny girls and I’m not large enough to be with the large girls , and I haven’t been able to find my place,’ she explained. As such, ‘this [campaign] was such a great feeling.’

And yet some people have taken to Twitter in outrage that she could even be considered a ‘bigger’ girl. ‘Genuine WTF moment,’ one critic wrote in a tweet directed at Elle. ‘This woman is described as “plus-size” and “a bigger girl”. Aaaraagahagaagahahagahahag’. Another person said: ‘I wouldn’t consider her a plus size model. Her height and her muscular tone should not categorize as a “big girl.”‘ And a third commented angrily: ‘How is that plus size??’

Despite the outcry, which seems to be directed at Elle rather than Calvin Klein, Myla says landing the campaign has made her hopeful that size is becoming less of an issue in the fashion industry.

‘It’s not like [Calvin Klein] released this campaign and were like, ‘Whoa, look, there’s this plus-size girl in our campaign,” she explained. They released me in this campaign with everyone else; there’s no distinction. It’s not a separate section for plus-size girls.’

A statement released by the fashion house expresses the same sentiment. ‘The Perfectly Fit line was created to celebrate and cater to the needs of different women,’ a spokesperson told MailOnline. ‘And these images are intended to communicate that our new line is more inclusive and available in several silhouettes in an extensive range of sizes.’

She told Fashionista in 2012: ‘I tried for a long time to make myself [lose weight]. I tried throwing up after I ate and that’s awful. That is painful – I would never wish for anyone to do that ever.’ The model revealed that she would spend weeks eating nothing but calorie-free black olives and pickles and spending hours in the gym to try to slim down to a more typical model weight.

She then gave up modelling for two years to concentrate on her studies but it was Crystal Renn who paved the way for her return as a plus-size girl. Myla said: ‘They told me about plus modeling which was something I’d never heard of before. ‘But then they [scouts Jeff and Mary Clark] showed me, and this is when Crystal was really starting to pick up speed, so I walked into Ford and the first thing Gary [Dakin] said to me was, “You’re the next Crystal Renn,” and then they signed me.’

But Myla has also noted that she is encouraged to have landed the Calvin Klein campaign, despite not fitting into the super-skinny mold. ‘Look at the history of the brand, they launched Kate Moss, and this is the woman who started this whole trend of waif,’ she told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year. ‘To see a brand like that embracing a greater range of sizes… it’s really special.’

Kate is 5’6″

Okay the modeling industry needs to stop playing games. If you are 5’11” and a size 10 you are not plus sized. Weight and height have to be considerd when judging “plus” size. It’s simple math, 150 pounds on a woman who is 5’4″ will look a lot different on a woman who is 5’11”. Sizes are a joke anyway. Sizes vary from material, style, cut and manufacturer. Many times the best judge of a woman’s size is the eyeball test. Obviously this won’t fly for the modeling industry but for regular woman what you see in the mirror is… Read more »

I agree with you. But there’s no way a size 10 would have made it as a model before. At least outside the plus-size category. And while I know plus-size starts at 10, I think – or hope – they didn’t try to pass this woman as plus-sized. So in my opinion this is an improvement. A model, portrayed as sexy, shot in flattering angles (no “real woman bend-yourself-so-we-can-see-your-fatrolls crap), who is a size 10. This is something to be celebrated, at least for me.

I love this. This is the “happy medium” we’ve all been talking about. Nothing against skinny models. Nothing against plus-size models. But to this, to this I can relate (and may I say, she still looks pretty damn thin?)

By the way, I don’t think she is supposed to be plus-size, and that’s what I’m celebrating here – the inclusion of “in-between” sizes. They’re healthy and beautiful and very much welcome. (NOT saying smaller and bigger sizes aren’t. But I fit right here so I finally feel somewhat represented).

I feel the same as you. For me it is also because I can finally relate with model in the industry body wise. Her body is exactly like mine only I have a more defined waist. (Don’t know how to describe it, guess I am more of a hourglass shape). I used to be a lot heavier, but I can never be a skinny girl. My shape and weight does not seem to want to budge no matter what I do. Guess I just have to start to embrace it, just like Myla did. (If only the cellulite remaining after… Read more »

I’ve always been thin and still have cellulite 🙁 I’ve had it when I was super skinny, when I was a little less thin, I had it as a teenager, and I have it now that I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. I have it no matter what workout I do or how clean I eat. The only thing that has improved it a bit were massages. There has been a couple of times when I have been able to afford them for a couple of months and it was FANTASTIC. Too bad it comes back the minute they stop.… Read more »

There’s nothing we can do about out shape and mine is also the reason I’ll never be a size 0. But I don’t really want to – in my teens I went down to a 4 and I looked scary skinny. That’s not what I wanted, not even then, so it was a pleasure that I got to eat what I wanted – for the first and only time in my life – to go up to a 6. Realistically I know my frame isn’t as large as most of the plus-size models. But it isn’t nearly as narrow as… Read more »

It ‘s ridiculous! there is a lot of photoshop in the last two pics so she doesn’t look like a size 10

The fashion world will need different adjectives. Also different sizing options. more like men’s. A 10 from one company and that of another may be very different.

Finally! Someone who is a regular size, well toned, in shape and sexy. She definitely does not fit the “look” of plus but probably because she must be rather tall. I think more models like her should be used because, and this is not to insult anyone, but I dislike the way the plus size models are shown. They select women who seem rather out of shape with fat rolls and even though a majority of women are like that, women still aspire to have toned, sexy bodies that are still realistic and healthy, which you don’t necessarily find with… Read more »

How is she considered plus size when Kate Upton is not? I think Kate has a much heavier look to her than this girl.

UK 10 is a US 6, plus she could be taller than you which therefore makes her look thinner.

I like that they haven’t identified her as a plus size model, it’s nice to be able to relate to a model (I’m 5’10 and a UK12-14 and look similar to this). I often feel like a ‘bigger girl’, and often feel very insecure about this, even though people around me would describe me as slim, but I definitely feel more comfortable at a lower weight. I personally would like to see more models who are UK10-12 as well, those sizes never seem to be represented. This is definitely a good start though. Btw has anyone googled her? She seems… Read more »

I’m sure you look lovely. I share your feelings about feeling like a “bigger girl”, although I’m only 5’6. For me it’s a frame thing. I’m a US8 (UK 10, I think), and I’m not very comfortable with my weight right now – or for the past year actually – I feel better as a size 6 or a smaller 8. The thing is, there’s no way I would ever go below a 6. My bones wouldn’t let me, even if I was too thin and ate very very little. So even when I was a healthy and fit size… Read more »

She is not plus sized… In my mind plus sized is someone who wears XL and up for the reason that she isn’t extremely tall or muscular, simpy has more meat on her. Myla here looks like her body is perfectly balanced, healthy and in the proper size for her frame. She’s not plus, god no.

In the modelling industry, “plus size” is anything above a size four or standard “straight size”. So a size 6, regardless if the model is 6 ft, is considered, and will be booked as “plus size” and part of the agencies “curve division”. (I work in the industry, it is very distorted and by no means an accurate depiction of real life, just industry sizing)
