Jennifer Lawrence: “I was told by producers of a film to lose 15 pounds in two weeks”

Jennifer-Lawrence-2017-Venice-Film-Festival-Pictures - Jennifer Lawrence: "I was told by producers of a film to lose 15 pounds in two weeks"

The full story from People:

“When I was much younger and starting out, I was told by producers of a film to lose 15 pounds in two weeks,” she said, revealing another actress before her had already been fired for not losing the weight fast enough. But it did not end there, she said.

“During this time a female producer had me do a nude line-up with about five women who were much, much, thinner than me. We are stood side-by-side with only tape on covering our privates,” she added. “After that degrading and humiliating line-up, the female producer told me I should use the naked photos of myself as inspiration for my diet.”

Lawrence said she tried to stand up for herself and told another producer she thought the weight loss demands were not appropriate.

“He said he didn’t know why everyone thought I was so fat, he thought I was ‘perfectly f~~~able.’” The actress said she felt “trapped” by the experience. “I let myself be treated a certain way because I felt I had to for my career,” she shared. “I’m still learning that I don’t have to smile when a man makes me uncomfortable,” she added. “Every human being should have the power to be treated with respect because they’re human.”

I like her body and face but not so much her acting. Most guys like her body and especially her bosom. I can see why that female producer who probably prefers size zero actresses did not like JLaw’s body. Females in hollywood idealize much thinner bodies.
I think Hollywood can be psychopathic like that female producer. Some people have the need to put others down unfortunately it’s always about the weight.

What an awful experience to go through. I think probably every woman, fat, thin, tall, short, has felt objectified at some point unfortunately. 🙁 She seems to have a thick skin though (no pun intended). <3

IT seems like she only cares about size activism, because she is actually rude af and insensitively about other cultures. She is a good actress but when it comes to Size she’s like Ashley graham very me me me. Actually Ashley’s a lot better. I agree that being told to lose so much so quickly isn’t unhealthy But this girl never stands up For anything other than HER weight

she actually donates money for childrens hospitals and has a social commitment for down syndrom

Still doesn’t negate possibility of her (in)sensitivity to other cultures. She was quite vocal about equal pay for actresses (and correctly so) and then was completely silent during #OscarsSoWhite debacle.

Yup… the thing that she joked about in Hawaii was disgusting but somehow J law always gets a free pass. But when it comes to em rat calling herself a feminist this site goes crazy. I also criticize em rats feminism, but this double standard is ridiculous. People love j law because she’s not a size 00 and talks about it constantly even tho she is problematic in so many ways … honestly em rat is more woke than j law and that’s sad

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, you’re right. She doesn’t care about other cultures, there’s a Graham Norton interview where she shows it.

Average white women are easily triggered when their goddess is questioned in any way …

Gen

That is an extremely hostile and reprehensible generalization. Making assumptions and downgrading a particular demographic only promotes the exact thing you’re allegedly against. Chose your words more wisely because they only reflect back on you and diminish your message.

Ari

Apparently “average white women” is now an offensive term.

Do you hon.

Gen

So you had no message or point with your comments? I am not surprised. There has been a recent rush of hostility on this site, the majority of which from the same location, and the best way to stop it is by dismissal.

She does a lot of charity work for children and every year visits a children’s hospital in her home state. Granted, she’s no Angelina Jolie, but she does quite a lot for charity and humanitarian projects.

still, she was referring about OTHER CULTURES, yes, she gives money to charity, she’s still not perfect when talking and referring to other cultures

Ari

Yeah I rarely hear her speak up in ways that don’t affect her directly. For example racism in Hollywood. I only hear her speaking up against weight issues because that has impacted her.

I don’t want to justify her actions because you make an excellent point but is it possible that she doesn’t feel comfortable speaking up about things that don’t affect her? I’m not saying she’s right but maybe we should not be so quick to judge.

She likely lost the 15 pounds and got the role she wanted. Unfortunately working for a living requires you to meet the demands of the job. Believe it or not, some people watch certain shows and movies not only because of the story line, because they like the actor / actress and may be attracted to them. Casting someone like Ashley Graham for Hunger Games probably wouldn’t help in ticket sales. They wanted someone who was active, fit looking, and convincible for the part. I am totally not for sexual harassment, especially for young girls who don’t know any better,… Read more »

This is disgusting and infuriating. Sexual harassment is still very much alive and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to count their blessings or/and check their privilege. It’s easy to criticize them for not speaking up earlier but it’s not that easy. A few weeks ago I had an old man propisition me, he sat at my table at a cafe and asked me to dinner. But he is a big figure in my line of work and I was afraid he could hurt my career, also I’m so afraid of being rude to people I sort of panicked, I didn’t… Read more »

I’m so sorry this happened to you, and you’re right. I pretty much put up with having “boyfriends” who aren’t really present and/or that great because it’s an easier cop out than to say “yes I’m single, and no I’m not interested” to men who are too old and/or are being appropriate by asking you out. Even if they do (which I don’t reasonably object to), the worst part is the fear of saying no. This isn’t just Hollywood. It’s everywhere. I can shut down the talk when it makes me uncomfortable, but the worst part is sometimes it makes… Read more »

@ CarrieD- I’m sorry you had to go through that, love. I do the same thing as Missy and tell guys “I’m actually seeing someone right now” and more times than not, they back off. I had an old man (like 25 years my senior- ughhh) proposition me as well and that’s what I told him…he also had some kind of fetish for black girls and that made me even more disgusted lol

Thank you (and also to Missy). I’ve used the “I have a boyfriend excuse” and it does work, but isn’t it infuriating? How they’ll only respect us if we “belong” to another man (either real or imaginary)? It’s not really us they’re respecting, it’s the other male. So I’ve stopped using that. Not that I’m saying it’s wrong, as you can see I didn’t do so well at my attempt to reject a creep as an admitedly single woman. But I really want to be able to assert myself even when it makes me feel awkward, I’m almost 30 and… Read more »

You don’t have to lie. I like to thank them graciously but refuse. “Oh thanks, you’re so sweet but I’m fine,” and they’re usually too busy glowing at the compliment to be weird about the rejection. I’d be terrified to ask anyone out so I like to respect that bravery UNLESS they’re being a jerk then I just walk away.

Nah, no need to be gracious, at all, because most of these creeps (ie., men who think all women are fair game) don’t deserve grace. It is inherently being a jerk propositioning a woman who is a stranger to you when you are a(n) (old) man. All men have to do is understand that being hit on in inappropriate places iS being harassed. Unfortunately, most men don’t seem to understand this (well, this type really does understand this and doesn’t give a sh*** about how the YOUNG woman feels…) and should be taking note of the current #metoo to educate… Read more »

I love that you’ve decided to stop using the bf excuse (I agree its like some of them can only stop asking when you belong to another man and not just “No, thank you”). We’re getting there… Slowly. But we’re still making progress. I have to believe this

you did way more than a lot of these actresses–you didn’t go on the date to help your career or stay in an in-crowd. Very brave and commendable. Being an actress will inherently require weightless and gain–if you choose to take those roles. Men do it too–the go from superhero to meth-addict in a season. I don’t think Jennifer was convincing in Hunger Games which is supposed to be so athletic and post apocalyptic yet she looks like any curvy, rosy-cheeked, sorority girl. Nothing wrong with that but it just didn’t work for that role. When you’re an actor, model,… Read more »

That’s just sick. I wonder what makes women in the entertainment industry be so quiet about it, only sometimes someone hints that way between the lines.

Yet again this BS. It was for Hunger Games, the role REQUIRED a “starved looking” actress.

A f*ckton of actors change their weights in order to fit in film roles.

Don’t like it, change jobs.

“Do a fuckton of actors have to go through this as well? Should they?”

That is exactly the question we should be asking. Being humiliated and dehumanized is much more severe than being told to simply lose weight.

it’s pretty standard in modeling. It sounds like Jennifer got many warnings before that point . . . and she’s made a zillion comments about being fat by agents and producers.

what does this have to do with men’s rights? Modeling is 70% having the right body and acting, especially if you choose to go for the sexy bombshell roles, is heavily dependent on how you look. I wouldn’t recommend anyone go into either because the essential nature of the job is awful. At least athlete’s bodies are focused on performance and not something subjective like aesthetics. If she needs constant coaching on her weight, she should just stick to roles her body is already suited for (which is a lot) and refuse all others (which I think she has claimed… Read more »

That’s the point, though. Just because it’s “standard” doesn’t make it right. Not to be hyperbolic, but slavery and domestic abuse used to be standard. So did child labor. We need to recognize and change our shortcomings as a society in order to move forward.

Probably if it were a male actor who were to play a nude role. After all, if you are auditioning a person for a nude scene, you need to see what they look like nude. After all, other than people who promote the new overweight movement, most people do not want to see an actress or actor who is out of shape and overweight in a nude scene. Thats just a fact of the matter.

Vanessa
Guest
Vanessa

Since the Hunger Games didn’t require nudity, there was no reason to have any of the women standing nude in a line up.

Gen
Guest

Indeed, the Hunger Games is for a young adult audience! And even if this were for a nude scene the process and comments would have been completely out of line. Not even porno stars should be treated like that.

This account is disturbing, but what is also disturbing is that she lost the weight eventually, didn’t she? She’s photographed going to the gym all the time, too. So she did give in in the end…?

Uma

Yes, the discussion is sick, but going to the gym is not a bad thing, what the hell are you talking about? That’s not “giving in”, that’s being healthy. Maybe you should try it sometimes.

It is good to go to the gym and eat healthily. And while slim she is not rail thin. I would not say that she gave in.

Gen

What’s wrong with going to the gym regularly? Maybe she’s just trying to live a healthy lifestyle

But you also don’t know what weight she was at when she was asked to lose weight. She could have been overweight and was certainly at a weight higher than the role required.

Yeah there is som thing off putting about her to me. She is a pretty good actress but not two oscars worthy and she is out in every film just because of her name. I remember in winters bone when she first came out thinking what is the big deal? She just seems immature and attention seeking. I remember that oscars when Ellen hosted how try hard she was trying to be a comedian and she is a horrible comedian. Her body is great and her face is pretty but she is not my favorite actress.
