Karolina Kurkova on Instagram Models: ‘They’re taking work from people who gave up their time and energy to learn their craft’

karolina-edit - Karolina Kurkova on Instagram Models: 'They’re taking work from people who gave up their time and energy to learn their craft'

On modeling in her 30s:

“I’ve been modeling for 16 years. I’m amazed I’m still around; we live in such a fast-paced world and get over everything so quickly. I don’t allow myself to compete with the new girls – what good is thinking like that? When you’re older, you’re more confident and comfortable. And there’s something to be said for being seasoned, rather than being very new and raw and not knowing what you’re doing.”

On Instagram models:

“When I started modeling there was no social media, I didn’t come from a rich family and I didn’t date anyone famous – my work spoke for me. I’m glad, because I learned discipline, dedication and patience, and it kept me grounded. Now you can be famous so easily and it’s dangerous, it can mess with your head. People are coming from left and right with two million followers and, whether they say they’re a model or a stylist, they’ve never trained, never worked with anybody, never sacrificed anything. They’re taking work from people who gave up their time and energy to learn their craft. I’m not judging, but who’s going to have the longevity? You might be cool right now, but how long will it last? Are people going to get tired of you?”

On being called a supermodel:

“It doesn’t really mean anything. It’s a strange word. I prefer it when people say I’m cool, or that I’m a hard worker, or I’m nice. Those are bigger compliments than saying I’m a supermodel. It’s just a title.”

I hope the Hadid sisters carry flashlights in their bags, because Karolina is throwing a good amount of shade 😀

i dont thin it was at them, since the Hadid sister’s still do other work. I think she means the ones that are strictly instagram models.

“When I started modeling there was no social media, I didn’t come from a
rich family and I didn’t date anyone famous – my work spoke for me.” Of course they are getting shaded. Hadid Sisters and the dull Jenner girl have high social media relevancy, have rich families with connections that helped them build a career easily, high profile celebrity dating life. Specially Gigi. God that girl gets around.

She sounds are little butthurt. It must be hard when you are a consolidated model to see some Instagrammer taking your job. Le Happy (Luanna) comes to mind. She has worked with Guess and has like 2 million followers. but I doubt she didn’t work for it. I followed her since she wasn’t as famous. She’s been consistent with her blog, her style is terrific and I think she has a fashion degree. It’s just an example, I don’t think what she says applies to everybody. Kendal and Gigi are more trash and unqualified to me, than some of those… Read more »

I think she IS referring to the Gigi’s and Kendall’s, not anybody who actually worked for their position in the industry.

Really? I don’t think so. They have far more than 2 mill followers. But her quote applies to them too well.

i guess she had to have crafts for hanging with rich men sponsoring fashion and gigi dont..life is a b*tch.

Modelling is not the hardest thing in the world but I get her, she started from the very bottom and had to escalate her way to the top, unlike some other people.

While I agree that practically every woman with an Instagram account thinks their a model these days the whole thinking modeling is a craft made me laugh. True there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes but the actual modeling itself, wearing clothes, being skinny and having make-up put on isn’t rocket science. The narcissism and taking oneself too seriously is so rampant today………

From the quote, I thought she was talking about anyone in professions who hadn’t trained, hence why she mentioned stylists as well. I guess it could also apply to make-up artists, for example- girls who rise to ‘stardom’ almost overnight because they’re constantly posting photos of their eyebrows and highlight being ‘on fleek’, whilst unknown make-up artists struggle to make it, despite the fact that they trained for years to perfect their ‘craft’.

Yep, Like Louis Tomlinson’s sister is now a makeup artist touring with Selena Gomez…she is 17 lol. More nepotism there…

Hone their craft??? I can see fiction authors taking her stance what with the emergence of self-publishing and Kindle Unlimited and other such platforms, but modelling as a craft? What a joke. Learning mouth open, mouth closed and to eat every second day is not honing a craft.

Still think she’s a stunner, though. And she’s a good model, for what little it’s worth.

I like that analogy! But even there, something is being created. Something more than looking hot for a picture.

I equate modeling to being able to curl your tongue. If you can do it, it’s not hard, you’re doing what comes naturally to you. But when you can’t, you can’t and it can be painful to watch someone who can’t try to do it.

Ive got no interest in social media. 99 percent of it is boring and trite, and I’m not willing to look at all the crap for the needle in the haystack. I supposed there is potential for something interesting, but its gone in the complete wrong direction.

Craft? Modeling? Okay Karolina, I get the gist but lets not get self absorbed and pretentious. It even sounds self absorbed when an actor says it, and its much more applicable to an actor. An actor, or a musician works at their craft. A model walks and poses.

Being seasoned is an asset in legit careers.

I’m not a fan of social media these days. Everyone is so fake and narcissistic. It’s like everyone out there are models, fitness gurus, nutritionists etc. Sure, there are some reasonable accounts. But mostly it’s so desperate that it makes me sick.

YES, YES, YES!!! Standing ovation from this corner for you, Karolina. Tell it like it IS! She is a true supermodel, not these wannabes from rich families/social media, like the Jenner fool and Hadid sisters. Lol

Agree. This is somewhat a throwback to something Blanca Padilla had said about how people like Gigi Hadid weren’t told to lose more weight because of the whole nepotism thing. I am so tired of nepotism in the fashion and film industries. I just read an article about how many famous people come from rich parents and went to private schools, good to know that expensive education paid off. Hah! What a joke!

lc
Guest
lc

Exactly. And when Blanca wrote that, everyone was bashing her for being “jealous” and “butthurt”. Um, hello, how would you feel if you worked for something your whole life, only to find that newer, less qualified people were taking over your job? Just because they came from rich/famous families? It’s disgusting tbh.

I agree with her. I think it’s sad so many models who have worked to get where they have gotten are getting work taken away by people who are “entitled” She has a very distinct look and gorgeous legs. But I’m not a fan of any of the new models being that I’m in my 30’s too, I prefer these seasoned ladies and don’t get the hype of the others.

Oh Karolina. I love *almost* everything she said…but calling modelling a “craft”? Errrrr no. “Craft” implies artisans, apprenticeship…learning something that is practiced by few and perfected by even fewer.

Metalworking = craft
Watchmaking = craft
Modelling =/= craft

Arrgh! Sorry. But it really gets on my nerves when actors refer to their “craft”…can’t help but roll my eyes.

I’d be bitter too if the only thing I was recognised for was being skinny and putting on clothes for photos.. and then younger hotter people were coming up. She just sounds old and bittered. That’s why having your job as something that isn’t tied to your looks is ultimately a better investment.
