Natalie Portman Brings Today’s Quote

181195821_10 - Natalie Portman Brings Today's Quote

On being typecast in “Jewish” roles because of her looks:

“Like, every Jewish role comes to me. Even now, when everyone from Mila Kunis to Scarlett Johansson is of the faith? I look more Jewish than Scarlett.”

… says Natalie.

Well i’m actually jewish, and israeli for matter of fact, and i must claiming these days that there’s a certain stereotype jewish look is so untrue and rather insulting.

Here in Israel there’s a beautiful combination and mixture of races that is a result of jews coming to this state in 48′ from all over the world, with their own signature colors and looks. Marrocan guys marry swedish girls, and then you get too see kids with dark skin and blonde hairblue eyes. Just look at Scarlett vs Natalie vs Barbra streisand lol.

each one has its own look

ani mi haifa ba makor! – chaya be New York achshav (sorry, no Hebrew font at work).

Totally agree. Jews in Israel are extremely ethnically and racially diverse, but in the United States where I live now, there is definitely a stereotypical Jewish “look” – mostly ashkenazi.

What? How can someone look Jewish?

M.Jay

kind of like someone can look italian (dark hair, eyes, olive skin) or eastern european (pronounced cheek bones, pale, etc)…i know its different because jewish is a religion/ethnicity rather than a regional derivation, but there are certain facial characteristics that someone may have that one can recognize that they may be jewish.

Ali
Guest

In London it’s easy to know when a man or a woman are jewish. Their clothes, the hair, the children, etc. I mean when they are very religious jewish.
In Spain, where I’m from, jewish is not a common religion, a friend of mine is jewish and I didn’t know until she told me.

Erica

Of course there is not one Jewish ‘race’ but I guess there is a stereotypical Hollywood idea of who looks Jewish – I would associate that more with men, for some reason though! These three women look different from one another and could be Jewish – or not! I guess we have people who look ‘Swedish’ and people who look ‘Italian’ or whatever – when actually many countries are racially quite diverse these days. Stereotypes are never good, imo, categorising people usually leads to bad things….

I like that her quote is sarcasm, and that she basically it’s saying Jewish people don’t just occupy one phenotype, which is true.

I think she is just beautiful. Her bone structure, especially around her eyes and nose bridge (I have a nose bridge obsession), is just wonderful imo.

Well, tbh before Natalie and especially Scarlett’s nose jobs, they looked more stereotypically ‘Jewish’. Even so, they are considered conventionally beautiful and not made an example of based on religion.. usually when they want a ” Jewish” character, they hire someone like Fran in the Nanny, Janice from Friends…

There’s something about her face that’s wrong
I thought so in the last SvsC article on her a day or two back, but couldn’t put my finger on it…

has she had work done?

Carla

I think having lighter hair doesn’t suit her as much as darker hair and it’s washing her out a bit, that and she is finally starting to age. She has looked 21 forever and now she’s looking closer to her age 32.

Well, I get what she says. IMO it’s very obvious that she’s Jewish -and I don’t mean this in a racist way. People shouldn’t be so sensitive. And I also wasn’t surprised when I heard that Mila Kunis is Jewish. Here where I live most Jews are immigrants from Ukraine and they have similar features, i.e. they look Eastern European with dark hair etc.

Ok, I dont know why my comment disappeared.. I just wrote to a comment saying that Scarlett while not being as active in the religion or knowing the language comparing to Natalie who was born and actually attended school in Israel, doesnt take away from her “Jewishness”. Sure, looks wise she resembles her Danish dad, but her Mom is ashkenazi (I tried linking a youtube video where she discusses her heritage).

Hate her body, she’s uber petite plus even when she’s at her thinnest like in Black Swan, she’s not thin, her arms in many scenes were just regular arms. The stunt dancer was the one with the hard core dancer’s body.

rite, she doent look jewish, scarlett face doesnt either, but scarletts body give her jewishness away. short stout bodies, short neck with heavy chest is a jewish thing. barbara streisand & that actress that played adam sandlers friends mom in dont mess with the zohan. they are generally top heavy. long bodies with long necks are generally a more european thing. but now, everyone marries out, so with some you cant tell.

Soph

Umm I have a right to defend my height when I see nasty stuff written about it because I think it’s good to counter the hate with positivity. I cannot understand why anyone would bother writing about how ugly some sort of feature is, why does her height bother you to even comment? And don’t ‘doubt’ that I would hate to be you, because I would hate to be you, I’m telling you that and you doubting it makes no difference. It’s a fact. You are a nasty person, I’m not.

Soph

Also, how insecure in yourself YOU must be to tear down other women. Everybody knows that only girls who are insecure in themselves feel the need to make other girls feel bad, to make yourself feel better. Something I’ve noticed is that girls who are very thin or very tall but ugly are the ones that go on about the importance of height or thinness the most. Because they have nothing else. I’m guessing you are plain looking, tall, and so you spread the idea that being tall is the best to make yourself feel good. It’s actually pretty sad.… Read more »

Ha, if you call ‘tearing down other women’, mentioning the fact that they are short – when they actually ARE – well…lol to you.

It’s not hate or positivity…it’s called being objective and truthful, about people’s apppearnces. This IS a site for critiquing appearances. Get over it, you are the one that sounds angry and bitter and twisted, to attack someone who commented on a celebritie’s appearance, on a site that is made for that. Dumb.

….but she doesn’t even look Jewish? At least not stereotypically so?And what exactly is a “jew” role? Most movies don’t have a particular focus on one characters religion, those that do she certainly hasn’t starred in. If she didn’t talk about her “Jewness” so much no one would even bring it up..btw this is coming from someone who thinks she epitomizes perfection, for all of you that equate critique to jealousy.

The “jew” look many refer back to is the stereotypical Ashkenazi face made popular in WWII… but there exist so many other faces of jews-chinese jews, japanese, ethiopian, mizrahi, kavkazi… open your eyes ppl! And SHOCKER, I know many jews from the pale who don’t have curly hair and a big nose and they may not look like your stereotypical idea of a “real” Jew, but guess what, they are! it is so frustrating to hear “she doesn’t even look jewish”…it just fuels stupidity and ignorance into a fire that needs no fueling. and side note (sry for ranting), ballet… Read more »

She doesn’t practice though. Jewish is both a religion and a race, which is why it complicates matters. I can’t think of any other culture or religion occupying the same space. However, I think Jewish leans slightly more to religion than ethnicityethnicity
Note that portman is super religious, while mila and Johansson aren’t. Maybe she doesn’t understand that. . .

Shiri
Guest
Shiri

Very untrue. Jewish is a race. Judaism can be reffered as a national or religion as well, but the large majority of jews these days are completely non orthodox.
Portman is not religious by any mean- she doen’t keep kosher food or shabat, and even if she were, it wasn’t the criteria to decide whether she is in fact jewish or not.
The only thing that makes someone a jew- regardless his religion- is if your mother were jewish

Guest
AlyssaMoh

In that description, it sounds more cultural/ethnic than actually racial. Like, when you think of race, and not its closely related word ethnicity, you think genetic and the transmission of genes. A father would have 50% DNA, the same as the mother, so a father would be able to pass on his genes as well as the mother. The cultural/ethnic view is that he doesn’t while the scientific view would be he does. The ethnic rules are socially determined, whereas the genetic rules are biologically determined.

I am quite surprised something minor like this would become an irritant to Natalie? Rather disappointing. I have always liked and admired her. Movie producers probably approach her more than the others, due to her having Israeli citizenship, as she was born there, and unlike Scarlett, both her parents are of the jewish fait, and not due to her appearance. I donot know much about Mila’s background to make a statement. Do correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t the term ‘jewish’ refer to a religion , as opposed to a certain appearance? Not to sound naive, I am… Read more »

Furthermore, a younger Natalie reminded me facially of Katherine Heigl, when she acted in ‘My Father the Hero’. Katherine, an American actress, has a predominant Western European ethnicity. Rachel Weisz and Bar Rafaeli are Jewish, both parents belonging to the Jewish faith, like Natalie’s. Debi Mazar and Milla Jovovich look very similiar, ofcourse Debi is of the Jewish faith, and Milla Christian. However, they both have the same Slavic breathtakingly beautiful appearance, with those piercing blue green eyes. Would Natalie call their features jewish or european or any other? Odd that outward appearance should be linked to religious beliefs.

You asked for a correction, so I’m not being a jerk. “Jewish” is an ethnic, cultural, and religious descriptor. People can identify as Jewish for any of three reasons or any combination of the three.

SA girl

Really interesting to know. You definitely not a jerk. I wonder if it applies to other religious groups. Fair question, to all women on this site. I am glad someone read my long speech, thrilled to interact. Just based on my appearance, people often ask if I follow either christianity or bhuddism? Half european half japanese appearance.

I am muslim, we donot follow that. Muslims all have different looks, there are Malawians, Nigerians, Indians, Bosnians, Syrians, Malaysians, Egyptians. We call it one brotherhood and sisterhood, and you can revert, another word for convert, to islam even if you not born muslim. I think with christianity its like that as well. With judaism, your mom has to be jewish for you to be jewish, so Lenny Kravitz and Gywneth Paltrow are and can never be accepted as jewish, cos their dad is, and not their moms. You dont have to have a certain look to be muslim.

I am quite familiar with moslem culture and belief, as I worked in the UAE and surrounding areas for approximately 5 years and more. Very similar to Christianity, Bhuddhism and Hinduism, not in belief idealogies, but the fact that one can convert, or ‘revert’ as you put it. Informative nonetheless. I have one unanswered question however. If the belief system is the same, why is there so much conflict between various moslem nations, like Sunni, Shiaite?

Samira
Guest
Samira

The fighting is so brutal, evil and stupid. They are both muslim groups, just petty differences in the way they make namaaz and some small other things, which is a prayer to God. There is not much of a difference at all. Like Catholics and Protestants, Christians but with petty differences. So much conflict in Ireland over this, wasnt it Bloody Sunday?

SA girl

I am not irish, but I think it involved the British army killing unarmed protesting civilians, or something of that nature. We had a similiar incident in SA, not for the same reasons, but for Bantu Education, commemorated on June 16 as Youth day. I believe it was partially initiated by discrimination from the Catholic minority. Ofcourse, someone with irish roots would know better concerning this subject. Off topic, I keep thinking U2 “Bloody Sunday”, one of my favourite bands of all time. Political, and concerning worldly matters. I do understand your reason for mentioning Ireland, to strike a similarity… Read more »

True. I guess I am surrounded by friends who are opposite religiously to what they supposed to be. It is quite amazing really, you will not believe it. I have a Scottish European bhuddist friend, Afrikaans Dutch South African hindu friend, Chinese moslem colleague. There are plenty so called Jewish buddhists too. I guess if you can convert, why not! If Scarlet doesn’t practice judaism, or stated that she is not religious she is not a jew.
You can’t decide what you are born into and you don’t have to identify with it. Just saying.
And since when are jews a race?!

Anyway I do think she looks more “typically jewish” than Scar, but she gets the roles because she is a better actress. And far more versatile. Scar in my opinion is perfect for sexy roles, but thats that. (I still like her tho!)
