Olivia Wilde: “People in the ’70s apparently just didn’t have hips”

143704PCN_Vinyl10-569x1024 - Olivia Wilde: "People in the ’70s apparently just didn’t have hips"

On how she doesn’t fit in the clothes on the set of her new show ‘Vinyl’:

“I’ll walk around with the wardrobe assistant saying, ‘I want that one, I want that one.’ I really have been so inspired by all the wardrobe across the board. I can’t fit into any of the pants because people in the ’70s apparently just didn’t have hips. I guess that’s all the hormones in our food, but I don’t understand it. You pick up the jeans and they’re straight — there’s no butt and there’s no hips. They’re for a straight body.”

On how she can’t follow the ‘boyfriend jeans’ trend either:

“I try to wear the trend, but it always looks terrible, because I have really short legs.”

… says Olivia.

this is dumb, they did have hips you just need a bigger size.

Agreed. Also, couldn’t a movie set afford tailoring?

I used to wear original 70s clothing a few years back and I get what she’s talking about. There was a huge amount of high waisted flared jeans and corduroy pants that were completely straight from hips and waist. The cut was quite distinctive and I kept running into it thinking ‘who wears this?’. Finally I decided that some of the stuff had to be targeted for guys even if it was originally labeled unisex, or misplaced to the ladies’ section by the modern (re)sellers , because that’s the only way the cut made sense. On the other hand the… Read more »

I think it’s sad that you didn’t get the jokey vibe from her statement

I think sizing has just changed. Probably part of us getting bigger across the board, but I’m not buying that we have wider hips because of food hormones.

Oh, Olivia, I feel your PAIN! I’m tall-ish (5’7″) and I also have short legs. The struggle is real. Also, my mom told me she wore her jeans so tight in the 70s that she had to lay down and use a pliers to zip them. A demonstration of this can be seen in Dazed and Confused.

I have this same problem!! I’m not short–5’5”-5’6” ish. My mom is 5’2” and has longer legs than me. I’m all torso, long arms, and short short legs. Skinny jeans are terrible even though I’m slender and I try to wear long skirts that hide how disproportionate my legs are to my body. I know those jeans are for a role, but I agree they aren’t flattering.

My mother is about 5’5 and though she has long legs, she has a wide pelvis. She started making her own clothes in the 70s that were comfortable and flattering.

Um… I don’t think she has prominent hips at all though. Looking at her bikini photos, she actually looks pretty straight up and down herself.

I see nothing abnormal about her legs.

Well yes she does look completely fine to me, but women, even most gorgeous, famous ones have to have constant random insecurities. *sigh*

The grass is always greener. I’m 5’2 and have long legs and small hips but I have a short, wide torso. I always have to go up a size in pants because of my waist and there’s so much extra room in the hip area. I can wear boyfriend jeans with no problem but I feel self-conscious when I wear my work clothes.

that’s so funny my problem is opposite to yours and olivia’s, my waist & hips are narrow but my butt sticks out in the back, so i have to go up a size for the butt but the entire top few inches of the pants are too big because my hips or tummy dont fill them out…. ugh its hard being a woman lol!

Haha same here. I am 165 cm. My legs are as long as my 172 cm brother in law’s. So only a little left for my torso and my belly area is wide. Eventough I have a somewhat defined waist,it just is prone to disappear depending on my clothing and make me look stumpy. But at the end of the day I am content with my body.It is all about knowing to dress for your body type imo.

Is she really that dumb?

i love how she pretends to be ‘curvy’ when actually she is completely straight up and down..i can’t roll my eyes enough every time she opens her mouth.

Yeah. And I think the flared jeans work for her benefit too (unlike she says) you can hide a tall heel under it and they come really high on the waist = making your legs look taller.

martasara12

totally! and they make you look curvier as well, i have a similar straight shape (but long legs) and flared jeans are actually really flattering!

Oh, shut up, Olivia, I find you gorgeous and I like you but this quote was stupid.

I agree that she has short legs, but she is not tha wide in the hips. A lot of gorgeous celebs have Olivia’s body type (long torso, and short limbs), a few that come to mind are Megan Fox, Jessica Simpson, and Kate Bekinsale….yet I don’t think it’s the limbs that men are looking at ;-/

She’s so annoying on the show but I really like it…. Her vibe fits in but they way they wrote her yuck not her fault… I like her more now then I used to…

I find her gorgeous. When I tried on my mom’s vintage clothes from her hippie-times, they were very very slim, both waist and thighs. But she still somehow fit her very-pear-shape into them. I couldn’t fit in when I was in my earlyteens, and I had a normal, healthy body…. Maybe they just didn’t care so much about comfort.

I know what she means, my mom used to be a size 00 and she has NO HIPS, NO ASS, when im a size 4 with hips and ass. She kept really amazing piece of clothing and it is just so sad that I cannot fit… even at my skinniest… 🙁 I look at woman in my family and Im the more hourglass (like super hourglass)… they all have no a– and almost no hips, it is so weird…

She’s not hippie at all. She does have a long torso with long arms and shorter legs–that’s just her body type. She actually looks good in a high-waisted flare and platforms. It balances out her long-waist/shorter legs body type.

Skinny jeans and flat, knee-high boots is not a good look for her.
