You would have to be consuming at least 250 calories everyday to lose 5 pounds, so I guess it is reasonable.

How do you work that out? “In two weeks you’ll lose five pounds” That’s two and a half pounds a week. To “lose a pound a week” you’re supposed to cut down by 500 calories. So to lose 2 and a half you’re looking at cutting out over 1,000. Obviously it differs for everyone and I’m doing this very crudely. Anyway, I have to say that personally I disagree. For me, alcohol doesn’t make me gain weight. May be because I don’t drink wine/creamy liqueurs/beer or drinks full of sugar. I’ve never gained weight from drinking a lot and whenever… Read more »

Stopn drinking? As in water?

Don’t see how cutting alcohol could really shave off the pounds, unless you drank all the time, or were the type to have a beer with lunch, and a beer with dinner…

I’m actually not sure where either of you are getting your maths from. A pound of body fat is equal to 3500 calories. To lose 5 pounds (aka 17,500 calories) in two weeks you would have to have a calorie deficit of 1250 calories PER DAY. Whilst I’m sure Olivia Wilde was exaggerating to try and make a point, her maths assumes one is drinking about 6 standard drinks per day (at 200 calories per drink). So yes, if you are drinking that much alcohol (i.e. you are Lindsay Lohan or otherwise institutionalised due to your alcohol consumption) then cutting… Read more »

She’s getting her maths from the fact that 500 calorie daily defecit = 500. 500 X 7 (days) = 3,500 = 1 pound fat loss per week.

1 pound per week is not the same as 5 pounds in two weeks 😉

I’m pretty sure what I said was correct and pretty much the same as you’re saying, I said: “to lose 2 and a half [lbs a week] you’re looking at cutting out over 1,000 [calories per day].” So yes, like you said, 1250 calories a day.

Yeah… a glass of wine is how many calories.
She must mean “party drinking”

Its true … I used to never drink, I started drinking once every other weekend at the bars and bam ten pounds in the year. She could also be referring to other drinks other than water like coffee, capichinos etc which really add up. I’m sure if I gave up my starbucks addiction I’d lose pretty fast.

She is so fascinating and gorgeous! I love her! Downright gorgeous too in Tron: Legacy.
True to what she says about drinking. Cut down on drinking and it helps you lose weight. Ah, bread is so good though!

Good message lousy timing!! I mean really give up drinking at this time of year? What with snowballs, eggnog, champagne and all the other alcohol I’ll be consuming between now and New Year I won’t be considering this until at least mid January!! Mind you she does look great.

mainly beer! When I started drink beer, my belly swelled amazingly.
She is gorgeous, but I don’t like the magazine cover, her nose looks weird.

I don’t think these pictures flatter her face or body at all, especially the second one exposing her stomach. She doesn’t go in at all at the waist and looks to have quite boyish hips when irl I thought she was more curvy.

All in all I am not a fan of the photos, she has a harsh face as it is and the 80’s blusher effect makes her look like she is sucking in her cheeks. I think the best shot is definitely the last one as her face looks softer. Definitely looks better in the movies.

I love Olivia wild though. She is gorgeous and was stunning in Tron: Legacy.

Uh, if you’re drinking enough to maintain an extra 5lbs on your body that can be lost in 2 if you quit then I’m just going to call you Lindsay Lohan.

Yeah i drink maybe a 200 kcal worth of wine a week and that’s it so i don’t think it’d do much to me, but that’s obviously true to those who drink a lot.

That’s so true. When I was in USA I was amazed and horiffed how much sodas people drink. With every meal there’s a GIANT Coca-Cola…. that’s a lot of sugar. No water??

jenp

She was referring to alcoholic beverages but soda is bad too. I just want to point out that when I was abroad I was horrified by how much Europeans smoke. It’s really bad. Yet they scoff at Americans for wearing deodorant because it “could cause cancer” while they smoke 2 packs a day. Hmmmm. I’m sorry I’m mean.

Which country in Europe scoffs at Americans for wearing deodorant? they certainly don’t in England, where I live; we wear plenty of it too! Haha.

I don’t know about alcohol and if it works because I drink really ocasionally and not even every month. She looks amazing as usual.

Obviously this depends on how much you are actually drinking…but she has a point. For people that drink a few drinks each night, cutting that out would be helpful. Drinking is a lot of ’empty’ calories. The best part about not drinking a lot is your tolerance gets suuuuper low…it only takes me a glass of wine to ‘feel it’…really all I need.

Evie

Haha how much was she drinking?
Anyway, quite an unusual advice coming from a celebrity, for obvious reasons, but still true if you drink often, probably.
For those who don’t, it’s “sorry”! =P

I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that that’s what she actually looks like in the waist/hip area. I’ve seen candids of her before and she looks completely different from how she does in this magazine.

Anna

@Katy what you said was kinda rude don’t you think? I think she means if you cut out soda/alcohol/sugary drinks. I imagine if I cut out all sweet drinks I’d be fitter.

Well, I never drink alcoholic beverages so this doesn’t apply to me. Come to think of it, I don’t know many women who drink even once a week. I thought people grew out of that after college. Even the wine drinkers I know only indulge every once in a while.

as a 21 year old(legal drinking age in US for nonamerican readers) living in Miami I drink quite a lot. a margarita for breakfast is quite normal lol.. that said i actually lost weight since turning 21 and picking up on drinking more often. Its all about balance though. I watch what I eat. A regular mojito can have around 350 cals if im correct, and it feels very light. Its easy to add on calories if you have a few of those, obviously. I think cutting out anything, be it drinking, carbs, sweets, will make a difference. You just… Read more »

She’s got a point. It depends on what your drinking. One margarita can be up to 800 calories. Lots of sweet c0-ktail style drinks are loaded in a calories you’d never suspect. You don’t have to be a heavy drinker to pack on the weight.

when you consume alcohol your body switches from fat or carbohydrate burning mode, depending on what and when you recently ate, to alcohol burning mode. it is actually reported to speed up your metabolism when you drink alcohol, but before you can burn any fat calories there must be no more alcohol left to burn. calories from alcohol itself will essentially not cause you to gain much or any weight, however they will prevent you from metabolizing other calories by occupying your energy usage capacity.

fenotte

i don’t know how it works but it’s clear that drinking alcohol makes you gaining. I was not used to drink till i went to university, there I started drinking beer, partying every week, drinking quite a lot, I gained a beer belly and around 20 lbs in one year!

“calories from alcohol itself will essentially not cause you to gain much or any weight”

This is the most ridiculous statement. All calories that aren’t burned as energy will be deposited as fat or weight gain. Alcohol is a sugar and it is no different from eating candy. Drinking alcohol will most certainly cause weight gain if you do not burn the energy you consume.
