Olivia Wilde Was ‘Too Old’ to Play Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife

The story from Us Weekly:

Sophisticated, yes. But old?! Olivia Wilde revealed to Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show on Tuesday, March 15, that she was considered too old to play the role of Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife in 2013′s The Wolf of Wall Street.

“The funniest thing I heard recently was, I had heard for a part that I was too sophisticated,” Wilde, 32, revealed to Stern. “I thought, ‘Oh, that sounds nice. I like that feedback. I didn’t get the part but I’m a very sophisticated person.’”

“Sophisticated,” apparently, has an underlying meaning in Hollywood. “Then I found out later they actually said ‘old,’” the Vinyl actress recalled with a laugh. “I had auditioned unsuccessfully for Wolf of Wall Street. That was the one I was too old for.”

The part of Jordan Belfort’s second wife, Naomi Lapaglia, ultimately went to Australian bombshell Margot Robbie, who was praised for her portrayal of the Brooklyn native.

“I thought she kicked so much ass in that movie,” Wilde said of the 25-year-old.

If this is true, then the producers and director made a bizarre choice with Margo since she looks 10 years older than her actual age.

Totally true, Margot barely looks younger than Olivia.

I think she looks like an old, young person. Like how you can tell Ellen Page isn’t a little girl she’s just a super young looking, actual woman

I thought Margot was amazing in that movie. Maybe they didn’t like Olivia for another reason. Seems insecure of her to bring it up and make that public info.. like she needs validation that she’s not “old”?

I don’t know, I think just an example of age and marketing in the industry. She doesn’t sound bitter. Margot looks way older than her age to me. Either way, Nadine was very young in the book (and I guess in real life, since it’s a true story, lol) – in her 20s. It doesn’t make sense to give it to a 32 year old even if she looks young.

doesn’t seem insecure at all to me, the article says she was laughing about it, and she said she thought it was funny.

you’re insanely hot olivia, prob one of the most striking faced women in the world….but you were too old to play it. Jordan(Leo’s character) is a narcccistic douche who wants an “upgrade” from his wife. He’s the worst, he’s obviously gonna go for a “mature looking 20 year old”. I went to high school with girls who have the look Margot has, (she was like 22 when the movie was out). She looks like an old-looking young woman. She was perfect for it, and looked hella “The Nanny Named fRAN”-ISH I don’t think she was right for this part, she… Read more »

Actually I agree, she does look too sophisticated. Margo has a “Cheap” look to her, not in a rude way sorry. But the character she played was one of those mob wives type, like the kind you say “money can’t buy class” type,

I don’t like the ageism/racism/sexism in the industry, but I think Olivia wasn’t too bitter about this. She was probably asked something about it, and I think she told it in an apropriate way. I like her. But I agree that Margot was great in her role, although I didn’t like the character itself. Even if the movie focused on Leo, she still could have some more to her than just being a gold digger. At least a hobby or a friend or something.

Well, I don’t see Wilde in the role because she seems more mature than Margot, regardless of the age. Margot was everything they were probably looking for. You shouldn’t take it too seriously, it was because of the story. When you put different aged people in different contexts some are older and some are younger, it doesn’t mean that you ARE too old or too young, they were just trying to find something specific. Imo pretty pointless whining from Olivia.

This is kind of misleading. It’s not that she was too old to play Leo’s wife, it’s that she was too old to play the character of Leo’s wife, who was supposed to be super young.

Olivia has a mature and sophisticated looking face and did even at Margot’s age. No amount of makeup can make her look ditzy. Margot has the kind of face that could.

brunettes usually look “older” than blondes.
