Rebel Wilson: “You don’t want to be in that weird range between skinny and fat’

36 year-old Rebel Wilson is currently working on Pitch Perfect 3 and while the star doesn’t want to lose weight for her role, she is also concerned with looking twice as big as her coworkers. But more interestingly, the actress mentions the Hollywood weight pressure of fitting into a clear mould, where you have to be either very thin or overweight, just not in the middle, in order to have a distinctive label and get roles.

On the fact that her fans don’t want her to lose weight because being in the middle range in Hollywood is bad:

You know what? People say, ‘Don’t lose weight.’ You don’t want to be in that weird range of are you skinny or are you fat? Because how do you class yourself then? Weirdly, a lot of people say “Don’t,” but then I guess when you’re doing movies with actresses who are super skinny and whatever and you got to do a photo shoot side by side… then you notice you’re twice the weight they are.

On how she feels about her body and her outlook on body size despite the Hollywood weight pressure:

But for me, it’s just about being comfortable in your own skin. You never want to be like too unhealthy because that’s bad. But you just want to be comfortable with who you are, whatever your size.

… says Rebel.

To be fair to Rebel she is only capable of judging other actresses’ weights from her own point of view. If you are as fat as Rebel is everyone who is thinner than you is skinny and therefore ‘actress thin’ is very skinny: it’s weight relativism! I know this because I have a friend who describes other women who are normal weight ‘scary skinny’. It used to incense me but I understand it a bit more now and don’t take offence anymore.

You’re right, Ive been called scary skinny at a BMI of 20!!!! And its because everybody else is so fat, when somebody actually is skinny I can only imagine how they must freak out. I have to deal with family members, who are mostly obese or overweight studying my eating. ‘Oh, you’re not ordering salad!!”. Oh come on eat another piece of bread!. etc.

And people say obesity isn’t being normalized. They seem to think everybody who is reasonably slim eats lettuce and celery and only drinks water.

The picture where she is stretching her calf/shin threw me through a loop. It looks like she busted her lower leg because you can’t see any movement or flexion in her thigh.

It’s perfectly fine to be in the range of “are you skinny or are you fat?”! Why would you want to class yourself in the first place?! Or did I misunderstand the quote?

Honestly, I think it’s because in Hollywood there isn’t that range. You are either skinny or you are big. I don’t think she is saying that she wouldn’t lose weight because of that, but that is why people are telling her not to lose weight. Or, I could be confused too.

I think you’ve got it right. The majority of women in Hollywood seem to be either size 4 and below or size 12 and above. Just like the majority of roles are for hot, young things (mid 20s and younger) or matronly “old” (40 and above) ladies. Hollywood just isn’t super interested in “in betweeners” of any kind.

Well, she is certainly following her rule.
Anyway. So you dont want to be in a healthy range? You have to be an extreme?
I get what she is saying in a sense. The industry does work that way. They have super slim models, and then they have plus size.. or overweight. Not many just average/your typical size 5/8. Have to be either a 00/0 or a 12/16.

I understand her point. Her whole acting persona is based on her being the “funny fat woman”. Without that she probably would not get cast in roles. It looks like Katy Mixon jumped on the fat funny woman train. She used to be a lot smaller but I guess seeing the success other woman have had playing that type of role she may have thought upsizing was the way to go. Now she too will be typecast and can never go back to being smaller.

I loved Katy Mixon on Eastbound & Down. I just saw her recently and was surprised at her weight gain! I thought she was slimming down on on Eastbound and Down but I guess, like you said, she decided to upsize…

She lied about her age for a while so maybe that’s why. Then she was caught and admitted to it.

“That weird range” that is healthy.
