My favorite MET ball so far.
Amazing mix of perfect interpretation and fashion, almost costume-like. As to expect, Rihanna has one of the most impressing outfits. I wonder how Lady Gaga would have looked like.

I just don’t envy Katy Perrys table neighbor and Giselle, who is usually the queen of the the red carpet, looks just bad.

Mine too! Usually these balls are all the same – just slinky gold/metallic dresses.

Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Munn, Rose Huntington Whitely, and Blake Lively executed the theme the best in my opinion. I also liked Rihanna and CardyB’s style (not pictured here).

Madonna must have been waiting for this theme for decades. haha

Lena Dunham, SJP and Katy Perry went too far into costume range.

I wish more of the attendees had embraced the theme. I see that neither Kim Kardashian nor Ashley Graham could spare the opportunity to wear another metallic bodycon.

Rihanna looks great, but I honestly expected more from her.

Most of these looks are either super amazing or terrible in my opinion. Blake Lively, Rihanna and Zendaya are my favorites this year, absolutely stunning. Shailene Woodley looks like she’s wearing a cheap costume from amazon, what was she thinking? Doutzen and Gisele appear to have missed the memo about the actual theme, too bad.

i think that maybe doutzen achieve a little bit, because of the meanings of those colors (white, red and purple) in the catholic religion.

I love Kerry Washington’s look, even if it’s a non-direct interpretation. Her afro is amazing and I love the pairing with seemingly simple dress. Bonus for combination of modest cut and glittery fabric.

This was a rather disrespectful theme.. Catholicism is not a dress up party, it deserves the same respect that people are supposed to give every other religion. Instead we have self absorbed narcissists walking around in ‘sexy pope’ outfits and turning themselves into caricatures of the Virgin Mary and holy figures. I can only imagine the outrage if the theme had been to throw on your sexiest hijab and flash your tits for Islam.

Truth.

Indeed. All religions should be disrespected equally.

chill…every interpretation here was beautiful. it was bound to happen; the art that came out of the Catholic Church is boundless. Would you feel better if they replaced :catholic imagination with Renaissance imagination?

Oh relax. First off, it’s important to make the distinction that at one point in time, “Catholicism” was a culture as much as it was a religion, and there is art, design, architecture and fashion associated with it. Second of all, none of these outfits are what would be considered caricatures. I don’t see any of these people dressed up in a way to draw mockery to anything, do you? Third of all, I’m pretty sure Persian/Arabic themes (Arabian nights??) have been used for these kinds of events. If not for the MET gala then definitely for similar events. I’m… Read more »

okay but the vatican not only approved of the gala’s theme but also lent some art pieces for the events…

and also fashion designers have been taking inspiration from catholic art since like forever…as well as islamic/moorish art + architecture…elie saab’s fall/winter collection from last year comes to mind

My top 3 favourite looks, despite the whole controversy behind the theme:

1. Blake Lively.
2. Amanda Seyfried.
3. Madonna.

oh, what a rich theme! the people who showed up not in theme look so stupid. kendall, giselle, ashley graham, wtf with doutzen’s color palette… zendaya’s joan of arc look i love, and j lo’s, and ariana grande’s print is so sweet and delicate.

I think at least Kendall’s outfit actually fits the theme, given the meaning of the colour white in catholicism.

I’ll always have a soft spot for the Olsens, and I think Ashley really looks amazing.
So does Blake Lively. Kind of funny how she got her break playing the character of Serena van der Woodsen wearing all those great outfits and attending all these great events, and now that’s her own life.

Everyone is talking about how awesome this year was but TBH I wish there had been more variation in the looks. Most everyone just went some level of Byzantine. I had hoped there would be more people who would interpret the look a little more out of the box, like Zendaya with her Joan of arc look or Kate Bosworth with her angel Virgin Mary look. Like listen I love me a good cross and headdress in various gold and red tones, but after the third one, it does get a bit old.

Amanda Seyfried and Zendaya’s dresses, and Kerry Washington’s hair my favorites of all.
