Forget talking about books — at Kim Kardashian’s inaugural book club meeting last year, all her sister Kourtney could focus on was Kim’s tiny waist. Kim shared a video from their book club meeting on her app on Monday, and before they could dive in to her selection, Embraced by the Light by Betty J. Eadie, Kourtney turned the discussion to Kim’s body.
“I can’t take your hips seriously right now,” Kourtney said to Kim. “Because your waist is so small and your hips are so big.”
Kardashian hairdresser and BFF Jen Atkin then asked Kim for her measurements, and Kim had Chrissy Teigen guess (she went with 23 inches).
“24,” Kim said, with a smirk.
“24? That’s insane,” Atkin replied.
“It’s never been 24 ever in my life,” Kim said, and after Atkin asked, added that her hips are 39 inches. After giving birth to son Saint West, 2, in Dec. 2015, Kim started on the Atkins Diet and jumpstarted her workout routine to get back to her pre-pregnancy shape, and lose the 70 lbs. she gained with Saint and daughter North, 4. But over the last year, Kim took her workouts and diet to another level with trainer Melissa Alcantara.
“Kim told me, ‘I love my body. I love the way it looks and I love my hips,’ ” Alcantara recently told PEOPLE. “She just wanted more muscle. She wanted bigger hamstrings, which accentuates the entire leg. And she wants those cut arms and abs!” Kim now works out with Alcantara six days a week at 6 a.m., and they focus on different areas of the body each day. “Kim has been getting some really nice results, like with her triceps!” Alcantara said. “She can’t believe how much has changed over the last few months. And when you’re in this deep, it’s hard to go back. She just keeps it up.”
The trainer added that Kim’s body goals have changed. “She didn’t want to be skinny. She wanted to have muscle and feel strong. And she wanted to find something she can do for the rest of her life,” Alcantara said. “I totally understood where she was coming from.”

Name: Betty Brosmer and later, Betty Weider
Also known as: ‘The girl with the impossible waist”
Height: 5’5” / 165 cm
Age today: 81
Occupation: pin-up model, author, trainer
Also known for:
being the co-founder of Shape Magazine
being the wife of famous bodybuilder Joe Weider
Before the age of photo editing, Betty stood out with her unique proportions depicting an hourglass shape with an impossible waist, measuring only 18 inches / 46 cm. But although Betty’s shape was admired by many and the beautiful blonde had a great career as a pin-up model (and later as a trainer and author), there was a lot of speculation at the time (1950s-1960s) regarding the methods Betty used in order to achieve her hourglass shape. While some say that corset training played a role in transforming her body, others say that the model opted for a waist reduction surgery, a procedure that alters the shape of the ribcage (and moves internal organs in the process).
What do you think of Betty’s body shape and how it compares to the current standards of beauty?

A few weeks ago, after Disney released a few images from their new movie Cinderella, there was a lot of talk about Cinderella’s (Lily James) super tiny waist. Here’s what the 25 year-old actress has to say about the topic:
On having a naturally small waist:
“I naturally have a really small waist. And on top of that, I have a corset that was pulled me [within an] inch of my life … The skirt’s big and the corset pulls me in, and that’s the point. That’s the shape [costume designer] Sandy Powell created.”
On not being able to eat when she wore her costume:
“When [the corset] was on we would be on continuous days so we wouldn’t stop for lunch or a lovely tea like this—you’d be sort of eating on the move. In that case, I couldn’t untie the corset. So if you ate food it didn’t really digest properly and I’d be burping all afternoon in [Richard Madden]‘s face, and it was just really sort of unpleasant. I’d have soup so that I could still eat but it wouldn’t get stuck.”
On the controversy about her waist:
“I think it’s all very hypocritical, and they contradict themselves, and they’re drawing more attention to it. I think all that stuff’s so negative, and you’ve got to let it wash over your head. I’m so healthy. I’ve got hips and boobs and a bum and a small waist.”
On promoting a healthy body image:
“For girls growing up sometimes I think they get the wrong idea for what women should look like. And I think it’s so important to be healthy and confident and natural. And not put too much stress on trying to be thin—I don’t get the thin, thin thing at all. I’m actually finding it really hard not to eat right now.”
28 year-old Keira Knightley attended the Chanel Photocall as part of the Paris Fashion Week Ready To Wear Autumn/Winter 2014 in Paris the other day in an optical illusion dress that made Keira’s already small waist look even tinier.
